UA’s C&IS to Host Diversity Forum

foster_50_logo-eh_-2cTUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The College of Communication and Information Sciences’ annual Discerning Diverse Voices: Symposium on Diversity begins Wednesday, March 13, at 7 p.m. with a screening and discussion of the 1963 Robert Drew film “CRISIS: Behind a Presidential Decision.”

The film details the decision to send federal troops to The University of Alabama on the occasion of George Wallace’s Stand in the Schoolhouse Door. The screening, followed by a discussion, will take place in 205 Gorgas Library.

Throughout the day Thursday, March 14, more than two-dozen academic research projects related to diversity will be showcased in a poster session, a series of research presentations and panel discussions. The Diversity Symposium culminates with a keynote address by Birmingham News reporter Barnett Wright, author of “1963:  How the Birmingham Civil Rights Movement Changed America and the World.” All events will be held in 205 Gorgas Library.

This is the third year for the Diversity Symposium, sponsored by the Communication and Diversity Forum, a network of faculty members in the College of Communication and Information Sciences as well as throughout the Southeast whose teaching, research and service includes some aspect of diversity. This year’s event coincides with the 50th anniversary of the University’s successful integration in 1963.

“We are most excited that this established event at The University of Alabama showcases the ongoing research of our undergraduate, graduate students and faculty, and compliments the ideals of our yearlong celebration,” said Dr. Caryl Cooper, an associate professor in the department of advertising and public relations and organizer of the event.

“Through the Doors,” is a year-long series of activities and events commemorating the 50th anniversary of the desegregation of UA in 1963 and honoring the courage and dedication of the two African-American students who enrolled in the University on June 11, 1963, as well as the University’s ongoing commitment to change over the past 50 years and its commitment to continued progress in the future.
