UA’s Creative Campus Offers Creative Career Fair

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s Creative Campus and the Career Center will host its first Creative Career Fair from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, in the Ferguson Center’s Heritage Room.

The career fair aims to provide students with resources for pursuing successful creative vocations.

Students will have four professional development workshops to choose from, including  Crafting a Creative Resume, led by Dr. Rachel Raimist, filmmaker and TCF assistant professor; Delivering an Effective Elevator Speech, led by Mary Lowrey, UA Career Center assistant director; Budgeting for a Sustainable Arts Lifestyle, led by Jan Brakefield, Certified Financial Planner and assistant professor of consumer science at UA; and Choosing the Right Career for Your Personality, led by Chris Chirino, career specialist.

The fair will also include a “speed-dating” activity, in which creative professionals will give brief pitches to groups of students, explaining their careers, how they achieved their current position and the skill sets necessary to obtain a creative occupation. This event will feature Ann Powers, NPR music critic and correspondent; Rick Asherson, executive board member of the Alabama Blues Project; Sandy Wolfe, director of the Tuscaloosa Arts Council; John Miller, poet and UA New College LifeTrack professor; and Chloe Collins, executive director of the Birmingham Sidewalk Film Festival.

At the end of the event, there will be an open mixer where students can interact with the creative professionals involved with the event.
