UA President Judy Bonner has named Dr. Karen Baldwin as vice president for advancement, effective immediately. Baldwin has served as interim vice president for advancement since March and served as associate vice president for advancement from 2008 until her appointment as interim vice president. Crimson Ride will run regular routes until Wednesday, Nov 21, at 6 p.m. Normal operation will resume Monday, Nov. 26, at 7 a.m. The 348-RIDE (7433) service will operate until Thursday, Nov. 22, at 7 a.m. Normal operation will resume Monday, Nov. 26, at 10 p.m. The shopping shuttle will run as normal on Sunday, Nov. 25.
The deadline to apply for UA’s Premier Awards is Nov. 30 at 5 p.m. Each UA student who applies for the awards will need one letter of recommendation. The Premier Awards are the highest honors given by the University. They will be presented in February. More information and an application: http://www.premierawards.ua.edu.
Student Opinions of Instruction course evaluation surveys run Nov. 26-Dec. 9. Surveys for the School of Social Work will extend to Dec. 14. SOIs allow students to confidentially rate their UA learning experience and encourage feedback about their courses and instructors. Confidential reports of survey results are provided to UA faculty and administrators after grades are submitted. ATHLETICS
Know how to get in the game. The Saturday, Nov. 24, football game against Auburn University kicks off at 2:30 p.m. at Bryant-Denny Stadium and will be televised on CBS. Students who currently have tickets or need tickets to the game will want to know how to “Get in the Game,” how the changes to the way student tickets are handled, how to enter the stadium (Gate 31 only) and how parking near the stadium affects them. On game-day weekends during football season, many parking lots are used for Tide Pride and game-day parking. The following lots and areas must be vacated by 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21 for the Auburn game: Colonial Drive south of Eighth Street, the south one-third section of the Coleman Coliseum lot, the Tutwiler main lot and “triangle” lot, the lower Student Recreation Center lot, the Northeast Campus Drive lot and the large lot east of the Moody Music Building. Re-entry to all faculty and staff lots, with the exception of the Ferguson deck and the North Ferguson-MIB lot, will be restricted after 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 21. EVENTS
The Alabama International Relations Club will host guest speakers from Liberty in North Korea on Nov. 28 at 6:30 p.m. in 235 Lloyd Hall. LiNK is a grassroots organization in North America devoted to the North Korean human rights and humanitarian crises. Attendees will see LiNK’s latest documentary, “The People’s Crisis,” and also learn about the organization’s latest campaign. Refreshments will be provided. PHILANTHROPY
Students can donate their used textbooks in a program to help student veterans, dependents of veterans and survivors of military action obtain books for use in their education. Textbooks for Troops is a program started by the UA Student Government Association in conjunction with the Campus Veterans Association and Phi Mu Delta fraternity. Students can drop off books now through Dec. 15 in one of the boxes at the following locations: the Ferguson Center near the SGA office, the Center for Veterans and Military Affairs in 1 B.B. The fourth annual Bama Buddies service project has begun. Bama Buddies allows student organizations to buy, build and customize stuffed animals for donation to children during the holiday. In addition, students can attend Build-A-Buddy Bonanzas to receive discounted buddy prices, free food, live music and a unique chance to build bears with groups from across campus. Members of the Public Relations Student Society of America at UA are collecting coats and money as part of its Tuscaloosa Gives Back campaign to assist people affected by Hurricane Sandy. The UA chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness and the Counseling Center are accepting creative essays about students’ personal experiences with mental illness. Student actors will perform the essays as monologues in the third annual “Mental Health Monologues: Erase the Stigma.” Visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/8NJWS2D to submit an essay or for more information. The deadline for submissions is Nov. 30.
Student organizations can apply for SOURCE Collaborative Grants at http://thesource.ua.edu. The grant is a tool to assist student organizations in funding events that help build a better community at both the University and Tuscaloosa community levels. The grant aims to foster partnership and communication between organizations on campus. Eligible organizations that partner together to host an event can receive up to $3,000.
