UA to Welcome Top Students to Campus for Alabama Girls State

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama will welcome more than 300 of the state’s top high school students to campus to attend Alabama Girls State next year.

Girls State delegates will spend a week in June at UA working together as self-governing citizens. They will learn how to participate in the functioning of government from local government on the municipal and county level to all aspects of state government – legislative, executive and judicial.

“I am pleased to announce that The University of Alabama will host the American Legion Auxiliary’s Alabama Girls State program for 2013-2015. The University presented the most competitive proposal awarding additional scholarships and providing state-of-the-art facilities at a very reasonable cost. We look forward to our partnership with the University and to further improving the quality of our program,” said Lee Sellers, Alabama Girls State director.

Girls State citizens are a diverse group who share a common desire to learn. From small towns to urban areas, the delegates’ different backgrounds are part of the program. Since 1937, Girls State has taught young women responsible citizenship and given more than a million young people the opportunity to learn how their state and local governments work.

“The University of Alabama is excited to serve as host for the Alabama sessions of Girls State. This is an amazing opportunity to partner with this remarkable program and to welcome some of the state’s best and brightest to the Capstone,” said Mary Lee Caldwell, coordinator of the UA Blackburn Institute and Girls State counselor.

Applications for Girls State will be available starting in March 2013. Girls State is a program sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary.
