The Office for Academic Affairs encourages students to familiarize themselves with the benefits of DegreeWorks, the University’s software program that provides Web-based academic advising and degree audit tools. Administered by the Office of the University Registrar, DegreeWorks helps students finish in eight semesters by enhancing their ability to plan schedules, track progress in degree completion and calculate GPA. Students can receive help with their research papers by using the “research rescue” service at Gorgas Library. Librarians are always available to help with developing research topics, finding resources and citing sources. SAS Education Analytic Suite is now available to academic departments, faculty, staff and students on personal and University-owned machines for teaching and research purposes at no charge to the end user, according to the Office of Information Technology. Students can honor friends and loved ones who have been affected by breast cancer, or they can remember someone who has died from the disease, by creating ornaments for the Breast Cancer Honor and Remembrance Tree event sponsored by the Women’s Resource Center. Trees will be located at the following locations during October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month: the Ferguson Center, the Student Recreation Center, the Student Health Center and Capstone Village. DewPoint, Sigma Tau Delta‘s literary magazine, is accepting creative and critical submissions for the 2013 edition. The Student Health Fair will be held Oct. 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Ferguson Center Plaza. Students can receive free vaccinations and screenings, including flu shots and blood-pressure, glucose, cholesterol and anemia screenings. Free massages will also be available. UA organizations involved in the health and well-being of students and representatives of area nonprofit agencies will distribute information about their services. Free refreshments and snacks will be provided. Door prizes will be given away. Students will need to bring their ACT cards to participate in the health fair. UA’s “Timeless Traditions” homecoming week concludes Saturday, Oct. 27, with the Crimson Tide’s football game against the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Bryant-Denny Stadium. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m. and will be televised on ESPN. The annual pep rally and bonfire will he held Friday, Oct. 26, on the Quad. The 19th annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger continues through Nov. 16. Beat Auburn Beat Hunger is an annual food drive held during the weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl. During the drive, UA students, faculty, staff and alumni, together with citizens in West Alabama, challenge Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama to see who can collect more nonperishable food to help needy families. The banquet will allow many to gain a new perspective on the root causes of hunger and poverty in the world. The Student Government Association and the Community Service Center will host another Sunday Service project. Students can volunteer to work shifts for an upcoming drive that will register individuals who want to donate bone marrow.
