The University of Alabama Annual Campus Security and Fire Safety Report and The University of Alabama Gadsden Center Annual Campus Security Report are now available. These reports are required by federal law and contain policy statements and crime statistics, and for UA, applicable fire safety policies and procedures. These reports also address policies, procedures and programs concerning safety and security (e.g., policies for responding to emergency situations and sexual offenses). Three years’ worth of statistics are included for certain types of crimes that were reported to have occurred on campus, in or on off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the school, and on public property within or immediately adjacent to the campus. The UA and Gadsden Center reports are available online to view or print at http://safety.ua.edu. People may also request a paper copy of either report from the Office of Community Services at 205-348-8361, http://police.ua.edu or at Box 870180, Tuscaloosa, AL 35487-0180.
Classes will be dismissed Thursday and Friday, Oct. 4-5, for the midsemester break. Crimson Ride and Bama Dining will adjust their hours and services during the break. Crimson Ride will have fewer buses but will run regular routes from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. 348-RIDE on-demand service will operate when the buses are not in service. Click on Bama Dining for each eating establishment’s schedule of hours for Oct. 4-5. All other UA operations will proceed as normal unless students are notified otherwise.
Free flu vaccinations for UA students will be available at the following locations from noon to 4:30 p.m. on the dates indicated: Oct. 9 at Paty Hall; Oct. 10 at Presidential Village; and Oct. 11 at Riverside Community. Free flu shots are also available at the Student Health Center during regular clinic hours; no appointment is necessary. Supplies are limited. More information: Student Health Center at 348-6262.
The Graduate Student Assembly invites all UA graduate students participating in research to submit their abstracts for the Graduate Student Association Research Conference, which will be held Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Shelby Hall. Abstracts should be 250-300 words each and are due Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. Submitted posters should be 36 inches by 48 inches. Talks will be approximately 15 minutes with time allowed for follow-up questions and answers. Register at http://sa.tix.com. More information: Joseph Meany at jemeany@crimson.ua.edu. The goal of the conference is to enhance student awareness and involvement in research around the UA campus and to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their work and promote understanding and communication between interdepartmental fields.
EVENTS
The Student Government Association’s Academic Scavenger Hunt began Oct. 1 and will end Oct. 26. During this event, students obtain and complete an Academic Passport. Each participating student must perform the following activities in order to complete a passport: visit two separate professors during their office hours, attend an advising session, use an academic resource on campus (e.g., the Center for Teaching and Learning, engineering labs, the Writing Center) and complete an academic planner on DegreeWorks. When the Academic Passport is full, a student returns the passport to the SGA office and enters a drawing for prizes, which include a $1,000 scholarship, a $500 scholarship, an iPad and Ray-Ban sunglasses. Students can learn about their rights as a tenant before they sign a lease by attending a seminar on landlords, leases and legalities Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. Students will be able to ask questions of members of a panel that includes local landlords, attorneys and UA off-campus housing representatives. The UA Crossroads Community Center has organized a variety of campus events open to the community for national Hispanic Heritage Month, which is currently in progress and will continue through Oct. 15. Activities and events range from health forums and guest speakers to films and women’s soccer. A complete listing of events is at http://crossroads.ua.edu.
Students can buy tickets for the Avett Brothers concert at 326 Ferguson Center. The concert is Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater and will feature special guests Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for reserved seats, with a limit of two tickets per individual. Group packages are available. Students are invited to a special screening of “Switch” today at 7 p.m. in 120 Farrah Hall. Admission is free. The film is part of a Web and education program to build energy awareness and efficiency and to find practical, balanced solutions to today’s energy challenges. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
UA will offer an additional course term to students during winter break. Winter Interim, a new term of the Interim program, presents an opportunity for students to participate in creative and innovative educational experiences through online and travel courses. Students may enroll for one course during Winter Interim, which is Dec. 17, 2012-Jan. 8, 2013. Classes will not meet on official UA holidays. More information: http://interim.ua.edu.
STUDENT ORGANIZATIONS
The SOURCE has launched its new website, thesource.ua.edu. Student organizations can find resources such as The Lasso, a collection of activities like icebreakers and team builders; Creative Consults, a branding and design team; and the Source Course, a tutorial video series outlining important campus logistics and innovative productivity tools. The new website also contains a directory of registered student organizations.

Members of the board will research topics, write stories and create an original publication for freshmen and transfer students that will be distributed to incoming first-year students prior to their arrival on campus. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Arts Renaissance in Tuscaloosa Schools is seeking UA students to lead arts-related workshops for kindergarten through fifth grades at Tuscaloosa-area public schools. Volunteers are also needed to assist at workshops. Participation could involve as few as three hours. Students interested in a higher level of participation can also earn independent study credit through New College. The workshops are held during the regular school day, usually on Thursdays or Fridays between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., though days and times can be flexible.
