UA Social Work Lecture to Focus on Cultural Humility

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Guest speaker Dr. Robert M. Ortega, associate professor of social work at the University of Michigan, will give a talk, “Finding the Place for Humility in Culturally Responsive Practice,“ Monday, Oct. 8 at noon in 104 Little Hall.

The lecture is part of the School of Social Work’s Colloquium Series that brings speakers to campus to share expertise with UA faculty, staff, students and guests. The lecture is free and open to the University community and the public.

Ortega, who teaches foundation and advanced interpersonal practices courses, brings a wealth of both academic and practice experience in multi-cultural issues and diversity.

Additionally, Ortega is clinical consultant to the University of Michigan School of Social Work’s Family Assessment Clinic. The clinic provides services to the community by evaluating and treating situations involving possible or actual child maltreatment.

His research involves mental health and child welfare, relationship development, group work practice, treatment interventions and service utilization.
