Free flu vaccinations for UA students will be available at the following locations from noon to 4:30 p.m. on the dates indicated: Sept. 27, Mary Burke Hall; Sept. 28, Ridgecrest South; Oct. 9, Paty Hall; Oct. 10, Presidential Village; and Oct. 11, Riverside Community. Free flu shots are also available at the Student Health Center during regular clinic hours; no appointment is necessary. Supplies are limited. More information: Student Health Center at 348-6262.
Students can still register for the 2012 National Outreach Scholarship Conference, which will be held Sept. 30-Oct. 3 at the Bryant Conference Center. The Graduate Student Assembly invites all UA graduate students participating in research to submit their abstracts for the Graduate Student Association Research Conference, which will be held Oct. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Shelby Hall. Abstracts should be 250-300 words each and are due Oct. 6 at 5 p.m. Submitted posters should be 36 inches by 48 inches. The goal of the conference is to enhance student awareness and involvement in research around the UA campus and to provide an opportunity for students to showcase their work and promote understanding and communication between interdepartmental fields.
The UA Crossroads Community Center has organized a variety of campus events open to the community for national Hispanic Heritage Month, which is currently in progress and will continue through Oct. 15. ATHLETICS
Know how to “Get in the Game.” The Crimson Tide football team will play Ole Miss Saturday, Sept. 29, at 8:15 p.m. in Bryant-Denny Stadium. Students who currently have tickets or need tickets to the game will want to know how to “Get in the Game,” how the changes to the way student tickets are handled, how to enter the stadium (Gate 31 only) and how parking near the stadium affects them. EVENTS
The Community Service Center invites students to attend “Keeping up with the Kids,” an awareness symposium addressing illiteracy and lack of arts education in school systems. The event will be Sept. 27 at 6:30 p.m. in 309 Ferguson Center. A three-person panel will discuss issues faced by local schools. Panel experts will be Patience Melius, an employee of the Brewer-Porch Children’s Center; Earnestine Tucker, a Tuscaloosa educator; and Lois Palecek, director of Community Service Programs of West Alabama and the Head Start program. Each panelist will offer insight on the challenge of increasing illiteracy awareness and promoting arts in schools. More information: Phillip Sullivan at pasullivan1@crimson.ua.edu.

Students can buy tickets for the Avett Brothers concert at 326 Ferguson Center. The concert is scheduled for Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m. at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater and will feature special guests Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for reserved seats, with a limit of two tickets per individual. Group packages are available. Members of the board will research topics, write stories and create an original publication for freshmen and transfer students that will be distributed to incoming first-year students prior to their arrival on campus. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Arts Renaissance in Tuscaloosa Schools is seeking UA students to lead arts-related workshops for kindergarten through fifth grades at Tuscaloosa-area public schools. Volunteers are also needed to assist at workshops. Participation could involve as few as three hours. Students interested in a higher level of participation can also earn independent study credit through New College. The workshops are held during the regular school day, usually on Thursdays or Fridays between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m., though days and times can be flexible. RECREATION
Students and veterans with physical disabilities can learn to row at a clinic that will be held Sept. 27 from 1-5:30 p.m. Knowledge or experience with rowing is not necessary, but the ability to swim is required.
