TUSCALOOSA, Ala.- The University of Alabama Community Service Center is seeking volunteer committee members for the 2012 Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive to be held Oct. 8-Nov. 16.
A committee member interest meeting will be held Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 7 p.m. in 312 Ferguson Center.
Volunteers interested in helping UA repeat its 2011 BABH victory can apply online at http://beatauburnbeathunger.ua.edu/ for one of several focus areas, including campus partners, community partners, food bank logistics, fundraising and publicity.
The application submission deadline is Friday, Sept. 14, at noon.
As committee members, students will have the opportunity to volunteer with various BABH events and assist committee chairs with related projects.
“Getting involved with the Beat Auburn Beat Hunger food drive is a great way to serve both the UA campus and the Tuscaloosa community. Our committee members are a pivotal part of our success and all help is welcome,” said Andres Mendieta, student director of Beat Auburn Beat Hunger at the CSC.
Beat Auburn Beat Hunger is an annual event created by the CSC and the West Alabama Food Bank in 1994.
During the six weeks leading up to the Iron Bowl, students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members fight hunger and poverty in West Alabama by challenging Auburn University and the Food Bank of East Alabama to determine who can collect more nonperishable food to help needy area families.
In 2011, UA’s BABH food drive raised more than 237,000 pounds of food to win the competition; UA collected about 100,000 pounds of food more than Auburn did.
