ANNOUNCEMENTS
Dr. Judy Bonner and the Office of Academic Affairs are pleased to announce the start of a new tradition for the UA family: the launch of Celebrating Achievement. This new song is designed to publicly recognize and celebrate students, faculty and staff who achieve national recognition, awards and honors.
This week and next, the Denny Chimes will play the new celebratory song at 9 a.m., noon and 3 p.m. to help the campus community become familiar with the melody and to recognize and honor students who are past recipients of national-level awards. This includes 15 Rhodes Scholars, 37 Goldwater Scholars, eight Truman Scholars, 19 Hollings Scholars, two Javits Fellows, one Udall Scholar and one Portz Scholar. The song will also play in honor of faculty and staff who have achieved national recognition.
When you hear Celebrating Achievement played on the Chimes in the coming months, please stop for a moment to celebrate success and then look for an email announcing the award recipient’s name and honor.
The UA Ticket Office has a limited number of football-split-ticket packages for sale to students who had an opportunity to purchase a season ticket but were not successful during the earlier sales. These packages will be available for purchase beginning at 7 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 31, and the sale will run as long as tickets are still available. The student-ticket order will be available only online on the home tab at https://mybama.ua.edu. Packages are limited to one per student and are subject to availability.
An email with online ordering instructions and a description of available packages will be sent to students who are eligible to purchase tickets. For more information, call the UA Ticket Office at 348-6113.
The deadline to submit announcements and events to UA Student News is Wednesdays at noon. UASN is mailed to students each Tuesday evening during the fall and spring semesters. To submit an item, use the online submission form at http://uanews.ua.edu/submit-student. Items should be submitted at least two weeks prior to the event or announcement.
The University of Alabama has been selected as one of the top 20 schools for “The South’s Best Tailgate” by Southern Living magazine. The magazine is letting fans ultimately choose the winner in a contest that will end Oct. 1. SAFETY AND WELL-BEING
To keep students informed if severe weather or an emergency occurs on campus, the University uses UA Alerts to send notifications via email, telephone and SMS text messaging to contact information on file in student records. Students should make sure their contact information on myBama is updated. Students can update their records by logging on to myBama and making changes in the Student Self-Service area. One of the University’s highest priorities is the safety and well-being of its students. One way students can stay safe is to avoid traveling alone at night and to confine walking to well-lit, regular-traveled walks and pathways. Students can refer to the Safer Living Guide for safety precautions to take on and off campus.
LIBRARIES
A valid UA Action Card is needed to access exterior doors at Gorgas, Rodgers, and Bruno libraries each day from 10 p.m. until closing. All exterior doors will be locked at 10 p.m. Patrons should use the Capstone Drive entrance to Gorgas Library, the main entrance to Rodgers Library and either entrance to Bruno Library.
The Sanford Media Center in 205-B Gorgas Library now has a GoPro, a Lensbaby kit, a boom mic kit, a green screen, and additional lighting options for checkout, as well as stock video, compositing footage and Final Cut Pro X. Week of Welcome continues through Aug. 30. WOW is a two-week series of more than 50 events and activities designed to help first-year and transfer students acclimate to academic and student life at UA. Get on Board Day will be held Aug. 30 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza. Get on Board Day will provide students with an opportunity to see what UA’s more than 450 organizations have to offer and will feature entertainment, free food and giveaways.

The Alpha Kappa Psi coeducational business organization is hosting its fall rush. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
The University of Alabama Community Service Center is hosting the 2012 Volunteer Expo on Sept. 5 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ferguson Center for all students. Representatives from area nonprofit agencies will be on hand to provide information about their organizations and their specific volunteer needs. The CSC works with local nonprofit agencies throughout the year by connecting them with service-minded students.
Al’s Pals is recruiting mentors.Al’s Pals is a weekly one-on-one mentoring program, serving Tuscaloosa students grades K-5. UA students serve as mentors and help with schoolwork. Project Health is looking for health ambassadors for the Fall Semester 2012 to provide peer health education to UA students.
