The University of Alabama has been selected as one of the top 20 schools for “The South’s Best Tailgate” by Southern Living magazine. The magazine is letting fans ultimately choose the winner in a contest that is currently underway and will end Oct. 1. The winner will be crowned at a home game by Nov. 10. The Division of Student Affairs invites UA students to participate in the annual Week of Welcome, which is currently in progress and continues through Aug. 30. WOW is a two-week series of more than 50 events and activities, each designed to help first-year and transfer students acclimate to academic and student life at UA. The dusk edition of Get on Board Day will be held Aug. 30 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza. Get on Board Day is a festival-like atmosphere that provides students with an opportunity to see what UA’s more than 450 organizations have to offer. This year’s event will feature entertainment, free food from area vendors and giveaways from numerous businesses and organizations.
The Student Government Association in conjunction with the city of Tuscaloosa is offering the following deal for UA students: $15 tickets to see B.B. King and the Tedeschi Trucks Band live in concert Saturday, Aug. 25, at the Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. Students must present a valid student ID at the amphitheater’s box office to take advantage of the offer. Tickets are limited.
The Homegrown Alabama Farmers Market will be held every Thursday, 3-6 p.m., through October on the Canterbury Episcopal Chapel’s lawn at the corner of Hackberry Lane and Ninth Street. Fresh vegetables, fruits, eggs, goat cheese, handmade soaps, pork and beef are among the offerings, along with live music, kids’ activities, prepared cold drinks and baked goods. Patrons may spend cash or checks or redeem EBT/SNAP benefits, Bama Cash, debit cards or credit cards.
The Druid City Garden Project invites students to the inaugural Garden Party, which will be held Sept. 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the L&N Station in downtown Tuscaloosa. Local chefs will be paired with local farmers to prepare a variety of food. The Red Mountain White Trash string band will provide entertainment. Those in attendance will have the opportunity to view the documentary “Eating Alabama” by UA professor Andrew Grace. The Druid City Garden Project is a community-based nonprofit that works to improve access to and knowledge of sustainable local produce. The group operates gardens at two local elementary schools; the original of the two gardens is a service-learning site for UA students. More information: http://www.druidcitygardenproject.org/events.

All male UA students interested in joining one of the campus fraternities are invited to attend an informational session Thursday, Aug. 23, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. All fraternity presidents and rush chairmen will be present.
SAFETY AND WELL-BEING
To keep students informed if severe weather or an emergency occurs on campus, the University uses UA Alerts to send notifications via email, telephone and SMS text messaging to contact information on file in student records. Students should make sure their contact information on myBama is updated. Students can update their records by logging on to myBama and making changes in the Student Self-Service area. One of the University’s highest priorities is the safety and well-being of its students. One way students can stay safe is to avoid traveling alone at night and to confine walking to well-lit, regular-traveled walks and pathways. Students can refer to the Safer Living Guide for safety precautions to take on and off campus.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Al’s Pals is recruiting mentors. Al’s Pals is a weekly one-on-one mentoring program, serving Tuscaloosa students grades K-5. UA students serve as mentors and help with schoolwork.
