Honor students take part in Outdoor Action

Another group of new University of Alabama students has already been in Tuscaloosa for a week. They are sacrificing their last days of summer to protect and restore something even more precious. Our Leigh Garner explains. Each year a new crop of UA freshmen hike the trails of Hurricane Creek. Today, things look and sound different. The creek was ravaged by tornado debris, so Outdoor Action’s focus shifted to restoring and preserving this richly unique ecosystem … “All of the kids here are from the Honors College, so a lot of our natural talents are more cerebral, we want to like, grow up and help the environment through chemical engineering jobs and environmental science jobs, but i think it’s really good for all of us to actually have this hands-on experience.” Last year’s Outdoor Action crews cleared two tons of metal debris from the creek. “This year we’re concentrating on the riverbanks and the fallen trees and what’s grown up in the aftermath of the tornado, which are a number of intrusive species.”

Honors students take part in Alabama Action

University of Alabama students are giving back to the community. Around 200 UA honor students are kicking off the new school year by serving the community. It’s all a part of “Alabama Action” and “Outdoor Action.” Today, around 150 “Alabama Action” students worked at Flatwood Elementary School. They helped repair the playground, repaint the library and hallways, and helped revitalize an outdoor habitat. This is the 12th annual Alabama Action project organized and carried out by the students.
