New York Artist to Exhibit Drawings, Paintings at UA Gallery

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — New York artist Brian Novatny will bring his figurative drawings and paintings to the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art for a show beginning Thursday, Aug. 23, in the gallery on The University of Alabama campus.

The exhibition is titled “Brian Novatny: Paintings and Works on Paper.”

An opening reception will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at the gallery. Novatny will speak about his work at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, in 205 Gorgas Library. The events are free and open to the public.

This exhibition shows the evolution of Novatny’s work over the last 17 years. This evolution is more of style than content. The appearance of figures in the work has changed significantly, from stylized form to recognizable, familiar subjects. Novatny’s figures are oddly preoccupied and disconnected from narrative, yet there are bits of narrative integrated into each artwork, whether a patterned fabric, a figure falling, or a Hollywood look-alike.

Novatny has had solo exhibitions in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, New Orleans, Philadelphia, Seattle, Saint Louis, Berlin and Frankfurt.

Funding support for the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art comes from the department of art and art history and the College of Arts and Sciences at UA. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday. The gallery is at 103 Garland Hall in Woods Quad. Admittance is free.
