Students who plan to volunteer as part of “UA Remembers: A Day of Service” on Saturday, April 21, and who plan to participate in lunch on the Quad immediately afterward are encouraged to sign up at http://www.ua.edu/features/service/dayofservice.html. The UA Day of Service is being held to remember the first anniversary of the April 27, 2011, tornado by bringing UA and the community together to serve others. Volunteers will meet on campus the morning of April 21 and be transported to one of three work sites located along the path of the tornado. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., volunteers will clean and beautify tornado-damaged areas. At 1 p.m., volunteers will return to the campus to have lunch on the Quad, pausing for a moment of silence in honor of the six UA students and the UA employee who died as a result of the tornado. The UA Day of Service begins a week of events and remembrances that will culminate in the city of Tuscaloosa’s memorial service in Coleman Coliseum on April 27.

Slash Pine Press is accepting writing of less than 100 words that captures the spirit of the Tuscaloosa, Holt, Alberta City and University communities during and after the April 27 tornadoes. Applications for officer elections for the NAMI-UA for the 2012-13 academic year are due Friday, April 20. NAMI stands for the National Alliance on Mental Illness. Available positions are vice president, secretary, treasurer, webmaster, chair of recruitment and public relations, chair of mental health awareness and chair of support services. Positions are open to all majors and undergraduate and graduate students. Those interested should email NAMI-UA at namiua@bama.ua.edu and include in the email the positions in which they are interested and a brief description of qualifications. STUDENT INVOLVEMENT AND COMMUNITY SERVICE
Students can apply to be a part of the Nonprofit Protégé Program, an eight-week experience that allows UA students to walk in the shoes of a nonprofit administrator or CEO in the state of Alabama. Approximate dates for the program will be May 15 to July 1 and June 15 to Aug. 1. A limited number of students will be selected and matched to work with leaders from agencies in various cities across the state. The Good Samaritan Clinic at 3880 Watermelon Road in Northport, Ala., is looking for volunteers for a community fundraiser that will be held on Saturday, April 21. The UA chapter of Alabama Arise will host a panel discussion on the Alabama immigration law today at 7 p.m. in 309 Ferguson Center. Scheduled speakers are Dan Lemley, immigration attorney; Gwen Ferreti, co-founder of Somos Tuskaloosa; Tomas Lopez, attorney with the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Immigrant Justice Project; and Dr. Michael Innis-Jiménez, UA assistant professor of American studies. A “Take Back the Night” march and rally will be held today from 6-7:30 p.m. to raise awareness about sexual assault. The event will include a keynote address by Wendy Murphy, survivor stories, a candlelight vigil and student performances. The 30-Day-Tobacco-Free Challenge is being held throughout April to help University students, faculty and staff give up tobacco. The Health Hut is featuring smoking as its topic now through Friday, April 20. Students can stop by any Health Hut location to receive resources and tips on smoking cessation. Leadership UA’s on-campus food drive in partnership with the West Alabama Food Bank continues through Friday, April 20. Nonperishable foods can be placed in designated containers at Bidgood Hall, ten Hoor Hall, Morgan Hall, Shelby Hall and the Office of Judicial Affairs at 107 Mary Burke Hall West. The Homegrown Alabama farmers market will be held each Thursday through October from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on the lawn of Canterbury Episcopal Chapel, which is located across from Mary Burke Hall on Hackberry Lane. The market offers fresh produce, goat cheese, grass-fed beef and pork, cut flowers, baked goods and more. Bama Cash and EBT are accepted.
A free “Ask the Sexperts” event will be held Wednesday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Theater. Mental Health Monologues will be presented Thursday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m. in 38 Lloyd Hall. Refreshments and conversation will follow the show. Mental Health Monologues is a project that collects anonymous essay submissions from students on campus about their personal struggles with mental illness. The submissions are then used as monologues performed by actors during a staged performance as a means to erase the stigma surrounding the discussion and treatment of mental illness.
The UA Graduate School has announced journalism professor Rick Bragg is the recipient of the 2012 Last Lecture Award. Bragg will give his lecture, titled “So People Won’t Forget,” Monday, April 23, at 6 p.m. in 118 Bibb Graves Hall. The free event is open to the public. Click here for more information.
