Psychology Professor to Discuss Sociopolitical Context of Research in UA’s Dinoff Lecture

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. Elizabeth A. Klonoff, professor of psychology at San Diego State University and co-director of clinical training at San Diego State/University of California, San Diego, will be the speaker for the annual Michael Dinoff Memorial Lecture at The University of Alabama.

The lecture, sponsored by the UA psychology department, is at 6 p.m. Friday, April 20, in 208 Gordon Palmer Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.

The topic will be “Do Data Have a Conscience: Reflections on Research in a Sociopolitical Environment.”

Klonoff earned her doctorate in clinical psychology from the University of Oregon in 1977. She has conducted numerous research projects on tobacco control, sexism, racism and physical and mental health. Her work, supported by the National Cancer Institute and the California Department of Health Services’ Tobacco Control Section, focuses on the impact of discrimination and acculturation on health, cancer disparities and minors’ access to tobacco.

She has published widely on culture and gender diversity in clinical psychology, behavioral medicine and preventive medicine. She is certified in both clinical and clinical health psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology.

Her books include “African American Acculturation: Deconstructing Race and Reviving Culture” (Sage, 1996); “Preventing Misdiagnosis of Women: A Guide to Physical Disorders That Have Psychiatric Symptoms: (Sage, 1997); and “Discrimination Against Women: Prevalence, Consequences, Remedies” (Sage, 1997).

The Dinoff Memorial Lecture is given in memory of Dr. Michael Dinoff, who was a professor and director of the University’s Psychological Clinic from 1963 until his death in 1982.

The psychology department is part of UA’s College of Arts and Sciences, the University’s largest division and the largest liberal arts college in the state. Students from the College have won numerous national awards including Rhodes Scholarships, Goldwater Scholarships and memberships on the USA Today Academic All American Team.
