Architect Steve Mouzon to Speak at UA April 3-4

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Steve Mouzon, an architect, urbanist, author and photographer, who is known for his contributions to advances in sustainable place-making and building design, will speak at The University of Alabama on April 3 and 4.

Mouzon will speak to UA’s master planning committee at 4 p.m. Tuesday; to the City of Tuscaloosa planners at 6 p.m. Tuesday and to UA’s environmental stewardship committee at 10 a.m. Wednesday. All three presentations will be in 321 Lloyd Hall and are open to students, faculty and staff and the community.

“Steve Mouzon is a leader in the sustainability movement, and his presentations will be of interest to a broad audience,” said Dan Wolfe, University planner and designer. “Each of the three presentations will be different and the public is welcome to attend any or all three of them.”

Mouzon founded the New Urban Guild, a group of architects, designers and other new urbanists dedicated to sustainable buildings and places native to and inspired by the regions in which they are built. The guild was instrumental in the creation of the Katrina Cottages concept for building small-scale, high-quality homes that began as part of the Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts.  Mouzon’s Katrina Cottage VIII, which opened the second generation of Katrina Cottages, was awarded a Charter Award by the Congress for the New Urbanism. The guild’s Project:SmartDwelling initiative sets out to redefine the American home much smaller, smarter and more sustainable. Mouzon’s SmartDwelling I was featured in the Wall Street Journal’s Green House of the Future story alongside designs by three other notable green architects.

He is also a principal of Mouzon Design, which produces a number of town-building tools and services. His house plans have been featured repeatedly as Home of the Month in Southern Living and Coastal Living. He is town architect at several new hamlets, villages and neighborhoods around the country, using a unique face-to-face method of design review.

Mouzon is the author of two books: The Original Green, which frames sustainability in common-sense, plain-spoken terms, and A Living Tradition [Architecture of the Bahamas]. He has also authored or contributed to a number of publications and articles and is the author of the Original Green Blog and the Useful Stuff blog.
