ANNOUNCEMENTS
The University of Alabama will add a Friday night ceremony to commencement exercises this May to better accommodate more than 3,700 graduates and their families. Commencement exercises for students in the colleges of Communication and Information Sciences, Education, Human Environmental Sciences and Nursing will be at 6 p.m., Friday, May 4. Two ceremonies will be held Saturday, May 5, with students in the College of Arts and Sciences and the School of Social Work receiving their degrees at 9 a.m. and students in the colleges of Commerce and Business Administration and Engineering receiving their degrees at 1:30 p.m. In addition, the School of Law will hold its commencement exercises at 5:30 p.m., May 5. All ceremonies will be in Coleman Coliseum. To view the schedule and other information concerning commencement, click here.
Any student who is unable to attend the ceremony scheduled for his or her college may request to be accommodated at another ceremony.
UA President Robert E. Witt will host a reception for all graduates from 3-4:30 p.m., Friday, May 4 at the President’s Mansion.

An outage of all external network connectivity will begin on Sunday, March 4, at 7 a.m. and last four hours. No one will have access to the public Internet from the UA campus during the outage. Students interested in joining the UA Student Recruitment Team 2012 must attend a convocation to discuss the selection process on Feb. 29 at 8 p.m. in 20 Alston Hall. Failure to attend will result in the automatic disqualification of an applicant. Team members serve as hosts to prospective students and student-athletes through tours, lunches, informational sessions and game-day activities. Team members provide guidance and offer insight to students and their families regarding campus life, student involvement, athletics and enrollment. The Autherine Lucy Foster Award recognizes one student and one faculty member who have made significant contributions to The University of Alabama through their leadership and service to the minority community. The Black Student Union and the Black Faculty and Staff Association present this award annually. Award recipients will be recognized during Honors Weeks. Each UA graduating senior (candidate for undergraduate degree) can nominate a teacher from his or her high school for the Capstone Inspiring Educator Award by going to http://inspiringteacher.ua.edu. March 5 is the deadline to submit nominations. The award recognizes high school teachers who have inspired UA students to achieve their academic and career goals through outstanding teaching, mentoring and support. Students can make a difference in the community and earn 3 hours of honors credit through Plan First, a service-learning course in which students will focus on the various facets of the Tuscaloosa planning department. Plan First students will spend an initial six weeks learning about the city of Tuscaloosa, general planning principles, cooperation and conflict communication, and the rebuilding process. Students will spend the following six weeks serving and shadowing city of Tuscaloosa planning staff. The course is open to UA students of any major who are in good standing with the Honors College and have an interest in some aspect of city planning. Full-time students interested in trying out for Big Al for the 2012-13 academic year must attend one of the information sessions on March 7 or March 26 at 6 p.m. in the C.M. Newton Room in Coleman Coliseum. Applications will be distributed at each session. Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 9 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their research or artistic projects before judges. An undergraduate student must register his or her project by submitting an application form and abstract describing the project by March 9. Google’s privacy policy will change on March 1, allowing Google to correlate a user’s personal activities and to tailor a user’s experience. Users of Gmail, Google Maps, Google+, Google Calendar, Android mobile phones, Google Search Engine and other Google applications will be affected by the new policy. On March 1, UA students, administrators, faculty and staff will travel to Montgomery, Ala., to advocate for funding for higher education. Buses will leave at 7 a.m. from the parking lot at the Student Recreation Center. Students will participate in a parade, receive a barbecue lunch and participate in a meet-and-greet session with various political leaders from across the state. Higher Education Day is a free event, and community service hours will be awarded through Service Learning Pro. LeaderShape applications are available for students to attend a summer leadership institute in Atlanta, Ga. Applications are due by 5 p.m. on March 2 in 356 Ferguson Center. The institute will be held July 29-Aug. 3. The LeaderShape Institute is an interactive leadership-development experience where students will be inspired to learn new skills, gain new knowledge and discover how to make exceptional improvements in an organization. All UA students can volunteer through the Community Service Center to work at the Caring Days adult day care center every Monday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Volunteers will do arts and other activities with adults with memory disorders. Students can help UA win a national championship in recycling during Recyclemania, March 1-April 6. Recyclemania is a recycling competition between universities in the United States and Canada held to raise awareness about recycling. Items can be placed in any of the numerous blue bins on campus. Delta Zeta is hosting its annual Turtle Tug at the Kappa Alpha fraternity house on March 2 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Food will be provided. Start Smart workshops will be held on March 5 in 119 Bidgood Hall beginning at 3 p.m. and on March 8 in 300 Ferguson Center beginning at 5 p.m. The workshops are designed for women but open to everyone.
