Students who are interested in becoming a member of the UA Student Recruitment Team 2012 must attend the mandatory convocation to discuss the selection process on Feb. 29 at 8 p.m. in 20 Alston Hall. Failure to attend will result in the automatic disqualification of an applicant. Formerly known as the Crimson Belles and Beaus, the Student Recruitment Team will serve as host to prospective students and student-athletes through tours, lunches, informational sessions and game-day activities. Members of the team will provide guidance and offer insight to students and their families regarding campus life, student involvement, athletics and enrollment. The Capstone Inspiring Educator Award was created in 2010 by the Office for Academic Affairs to recognize high school teachers who have inspired UA students to achieve their academic and career goals through outstanding teaching, mentoring and support. Each UA graduating senior (candidate for undergraduate degree) is invited to nominate a teacher from his or her high school by going to http://inspiringteacher.ua.edu. A UA committee representing faculty, staff, students and high school teachers will evaluate the nominations. The Office for Academic Affairs will make the final selection. Winners will be recognized during UA Spring Commencement 2012 activities on May 5. Deadline to submit a nomination is March 5. Students can make a difference in the community and earn 3 hours of honors credit through Plan First, a service-learning course in which students will focus on the various facets of the Tuscaloosa planning department. Students in Plan First will spend an initial six weeks learning about the city of Tuscaloosa, general planning principles, cooperation and conflict communication, and the rebuilding process. After learning from UA professors and guest speakers, students will spend the following six weeks serving and shadowing city of Tuscaloosa planning staff. The course is open to UA students of any major who are in good standing with the Honors College and have an interest in some aspect of city planning. Full-time students who are interested in trying out for Big Al for the 2012-13 academic year must attend one of the information sessions on March 7 or March 26. Both sessions will be held at 6 p.m. in the C.M. Newton Room in Coleman Coliseum. Participants will be briefed on the program, including learning what to expect during tryouts and receiving information about benefits. Applications will be distributed at each session. Students who have conflicts with the dates and time of the sessions should contact Big Al assistant Butch Hallmark at mfhallmark@crimson.ua.edu.
Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 9 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their research or artistic projects before judges. To participate, an undergraduate student must register his or her project by submitting an application form and abstract describing the project by March 9. A shuttle service to the downtown area is now operating. The Downtown Express, an initiative of the Student Government Association, uses Crimson Ride buses to take students to and from campus and downtown Tuscaloosa locations. The buses operate on Thursdays and Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Fridays from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m.
The buses run two routes; short wait times are expected between stops. The north route includes stops at the University bus hub, Publix, Black Warrior Outdoor, the intersection of Fourth Street and Greensboro Avenue and Lakeside Residential Community. The south route includes the University bus hub, Bryce Lawn Apartments, Burke Hall, the south end of Bryant Denny Stadium, Moe’s Original Bar B Que and the Walk of Champions. Starting March 1, Google’s privacy policy will change, allowing Google to correlate a user’s personal activities and to tailor a user’s experience. Users of Gmail, Google Maps, Google+, Google Calendar, Android mobile phones, Google Search Engine and other Google applications will be affected by the new policy. The policy does not apply to Google applications for education, business or government. Users of crimson.ua.edu will not be affected.

On March 1, UA students, administrators, faculty and staff will travel to Montgomery, Ala., to advocate for funding for higher education. Buses will leave at 7 a.m. from the parking lot at the Student Recreation Center. Students will participate in a parade, receive a barbecue lunch and participate in a meet-and-greet session with various political leaders from across the state. Higher Education Day is a free event, and community service hours will be awarded through Service Learning Pro. Adviser Appreciation Week, sponsored by the SOURCE, will be March 5-9. Advisers put forth time and energy to ensure the success of each campus organization. Organization members are reminded to thank their advisers for all the hard work they do.
STUDENT INVOLVEMENT/COMMUNITY SERVICE
All UA students can volunteer through the Community Service Center to work at the Caring Days adult day care center every Monday from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Volunteers will do arts and other activities with adults with memory disorders.
