UA students can meet with representatives from Balfour at the Ferguson Center location of the University Supply Store on Feb. 15-16, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., to see the official ring collection, get sized and ask questions. Orders can also be placed online. The UA official ring is available to all alumni, graduate students and undergraduate students who have earned a minimum of 60 credit hours while pursuing a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree at the University.
Students can make a difference in the community and earn 3 hours of honors credit through Plan First, a service-learning course in which students will focus on the various facets of the Tuscaloosa planning department. Students in Plan First will spend an initial six weeks learning about the city of Tuscaloosa, general planning principles, cooperation and conflict communication, and the rebuilding process. After learning from UA professors and guest speakers, students will spend the following six weeks serving and shadowing city of Tuscaloosa planning staff. The course is open to UA students of any major who are in good standing with the Honors College and have an interest in some aspect of city planning. Full-time students who are interested in trying out for Big Al for the 2012-13 academic year must attend one of the information sessions on March 7 or March 26. Both sessions will be held at 6 p.m. in the C.M. Newton Room in Coleman Coliseum. Participants will be briefed on the program, including learning what to expect during tryouts and receiving information about benefits. Applications will be distributed at each session. Students who have conflicts with the dates and time of the sessions should contact Big Al assistant Butch Hallmark at mfhallmark@crimson.ua.edu.
Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 9 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their research or artistic projects before judges. To participate, an undergraduate student must register his or her project by submitting an application form and abstract describing the project by March 9. A shuttle service to the downtown area will begin operating on Thursday, Feb. 16. The Downtown Express, an initiative of the Student Government Association, will use Crimson Ride buses to take students to and from campus and downtown Tuscaloosa locations. The buses will operate on Thursdays and Saturdays from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. and Fridays from 6 p.m. to 3 a.m.
The buses will run two routes; short wait times are expected between stops. The north route includes stops at the University Bus Hub, Publix, Black Warrior Outdoor, the intersection of Fourth Street and Greensboro Avenue and Lakeside Residential. The south route includes the University Bus Hub, Bryce Lawn Apartments, Burke Hall, the south end zone of Bryant Denny Stadium, Moe’s barbecue and the Walk of Champions. Starting March 1, Google’s privacy policy will change, allowing Google to correlate a user’s personal activities and to tailor a user’s experience. Users of Gmail, Google Maps, Google+, Google Calendar, Android mobile phones, Google Search Engine and other Google applications will be affected by the new policy. The policy does not apply to Google applications for education, business or government. Users of crimson.ua.edu will not be affected.

Spring 2 registration is open through Feb. 17. Students can pick up extra hours in this shorter semester. Spring 2 classes, many of which are offered online, begin Feb. 13 and end with the regular semester. The UA Academic Advisors Association, in conjunction with Student Government Association and the Ferguson Center, is sponsoring a Majors Fair on March 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ferguson Center. Students will have an opportunity to meet with representatives from all college divisions to learn about majors and minors offered, career prospects, and internship and research opportunities available through these units. The UA chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers will host its annual networking banquet on Feb. 15 at Hotel Capstone, which is located at 320 Bryant Drive adjacent to the Bryant Conference Center. On March 1, UA students, administrators, faculty and staff will travel to Montgomery, Ala., to advocate for funding for higher education. Buses will leave at 7 a.m. from the parking lot at the Student Recreation Center. Students will participate in a parade, receive a barbecue lunch and participate in a meet-and-greet session with various political leaders from across the state. Higher Education Day is a free event, and community service hours will be awarded through Service Learning Pro. Adviser Appreciation Week, sponsored by the SOURCE, will be March 5-9. Advisers put forth time and energy to ensure the success of each campus organization. Organization members are reminded to thank their advisers for all the hard work they do.
STUDENT INVOLVEMENT/COMMUNITY SERVICE
Students can volunteer to help remodel the homeless shelter in the Cottondale, Ala., area for the Tracy Dent Foundation on Feb. 15. Volunteers will build a foundation, assemble and install interior and exterior walls, and lay bricks. All volunteers must wear close-toed shoes and appropriate clothing for construction work. The Community Service Center invites everyone to sign up for Habitat for Humanity Brush with Kindness. Volunteers will paint and assist with home repairs in the Tuscaloosa community on Feb. 17 from 12:45 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the Ferguson Center Plaza to carpool to designated relief sites. The UA Environmental Council invites the campus community to the “Crimson in Green” clean-energy forum on Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library.
Renowned flutist Paul McAuliffe will present a unique program of music, autism education and advocacy on Friday, Feb. 17, at 5:30 p.m. in 208 Gordon Palmer Hall. Diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome late in life, McAuliffe will discuss his own autistic journey of self-discovery. He will play quiet, soothing music on a variety of flutes, humorously describe “living Aspie” in a “neurotypical world,” and tell why today’s Asperger’s kids will be the inventors and innovators of the future.
Apwonjo will hold its second annual concert to benefit Invisible Children on Friday, Feb. 17, at 8 p.m. at Mellow Mushroom, located in downtown Tuscaloosa on University Boulevard. The concert will feature Kadesh and Perfect Stranger. Cost is $5. More information: Apwonjo@gmail.com.
