Nominations for the 2012 Last Lecture award must be submitted electronically at http://graduate.ua.edu/events/lastlecture.html by Feb. 10. Undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni are invited to nominate the faculty member they would most like to hear deliver a lecture on the following premise: “If this were your last chance to talk to a group of UA students, what would you say to them?” Retired faculty members are not eligible for the honor. Past recipients include Drs. Bebe Barefoot, Lawrence Kohl, Utz McKnight, Jim Salem and Ron Dulek.

CAREERS/EMPLOYMENT

Representatives from Mercedes-Benz U.S. International will be on campus Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. in 1013 South Engineering Research Center to share information with students about the company’s upcoming full-time hire of engineering and business students. Those hired will work in the company’s body shop, paint shop, Einfuehrung, assembly and business areas. Mercedes-Benz will share information about its new career program and graduate fellowship. Career Fair Awareness Week will be held Feb. 6-10 at the Ferguson Center. Multiple events will help students with their résumés, networking skills and salary negotiation in preparation for the on-campus career fairs to be held Feb. 15 and Feb. 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bryant Conference Center. A Start Smart salary-negotiation workshop will be held on Feb. 8 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in 309 Ferguson Center. Start Smart is a workshop designed for women but open to everyone. Participants learn what employers are paying for jobs for recent graduates and how to negotiate a starting salary. Preregistration is required. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Spring 2 registration is open through Feb. 17. Students can pick up extra hours in this shorter semester. Spring 2 classes, many of which are offered online, begin Feb. 13 and end with the regular semester. The UA Academic Advisors Association, in conjunction with Student Government Association and the Ferguson Center, is sponsoring a Majors Fair on March 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Ferguson Center. Students will have an opportunity to meet with representatives from all college divisions to learn about majors and minors offered, career prospects, and internship and research opportunities available through these units. STUDENT AFFAIRS

The Crimson White will host an open house Thursday, Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. at the Office of Student Media. The CW offers opportunities for learning and development in the areas of writing, photography, design, graphics, web development, social media management, and copy editing. NPHC Make-up 2012 Spring Convocation will be held Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in 132 Lloyd Hall. The purpose of the convocation is to help potential new members in the NPHC community gain an understanding of the requirements needed to participate in an NPHC membership intake. Students have an opportunity to ask questions and learn about specific organizations. One NPHC convocation attendance is required to participate in membership intake that academic year. A State of the Black Union event will be held on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom. The event will present a comprehensive review of black culture at UA. Guests will include Dr. Mark Nelson, vice president for student affairs and vice provost; Dr. Joyce Stallworth, senior associate dean for the College of Education; Tamica Shambly, president of the African-American Graduate Student Association; and Booker T. Forte, founding vice president of the African-American Association (Black Student Union). The presidents of the Black Student Union and the UA chapter of the NAACP will provide a joint statement, and Greek and non-Greek student opinions will be revealed through visual elements. STUDENT INVOLVEMENT/COMMUNITY SERVICE

UA’s Community Service Center is teaming up with the Career Center for the second semester of the Nonprofit Protégé Program, an eight-week experience that allows UA students to walk in the shoes of a nonprofit administrator or chief executive officer in Tuscaloosa. A limited number of students will be selected. Those chosen will help develop an initiative to increase UA’s volunteer contributions to the nonprofit. Students are required to be at least sophomores and have a minimum 2.5 GPA. A detailed application is due no later than Feb. 14 by 5 p.m. to the Community Service Center in 346 Ferguson Center. Interviews will be conducted Feb. 16-17, and applicants will be notified of their status on Feb. 19. More information: Rachel Edington at reedington@sa.ua.edu.

Students can volunteer to help remodel the homeless shelter in the Cottondale, Ala., area for the Tracy Dent Foundation on Feb. 9 and Feb. 15. Volunteers will build a foundation, assemble and install interior and exterior walls, and lay bricks. All volunteers must wear close-toed shoes and appropriate clothing for construction work. The Community Service Center and Habitat for Humanity will host the second House United Habitat for Humanity Build during spring break, March 10-17, in Baldwin County, Ala. Students from UA and Auburn University will work together on the project. Visit http://www.volunteer.ua.edu/nationalvolunteerweek.cfm to apply. All applications are due by Feb. 3. The approximate cost for the trip is $300, and the reservation deposit is $100. Students can apply for a scholarship through the CSC website; the deadline is Jan. 27.
