ATHLETICS
The University of Alabama’s women’s basketball team will host the University of Tennessee on Thursday, Jan. 26, at 8 p.m. in Foster Auditorium. The first 150 students in the door will receive a free hot dog and drink. Prizes that will be given away during the game include an iPad and several iPod Shuffles. The game will be televised on Fox Sports South. Students will be provided with materials to make posters.
ANNOUNCEMENTS
Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 9 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their research or artistic projects before judges. To participate, an undergraduate student must register his or her project by submitting an application form and abstract describing the project by March 9. Nominations for the 2012 Last Lecture award are now open. Undergraduate students, graduate students and alumni are invited to nominate the faculty member they would most like to hear a lecture delivered on the following premise: “If this were your last chance to talk to a group of UA students, what would you say to them?” Retired faculty members are not eligible for the honor. Past recipients include Drs. Bebe Barefoot, Lawrence Kohl, Utz McKnight, Jim Salem and Ron Dulek. ACADEMIC AFFAIRS
A workshop on law-school admissions will be held on Wednesday, Jan. 25, at 6:30 p.m. in 222 Lloyd Hall. Representatives from law schools will meet with students to explain how the admissions process works behind the scenes. A law-school fair will be held on Thursday, Jan. 26, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the ballroom on the third floor of the Ferguson Center. Representatives from law schools across the country will speak with students about their law schools, provide advice and information, and answer any questions. Attire is business or business-casual. STUDENT AFFAIRS
The Division of Student Affairs invites students to the first Student Affairs Expo on Jan. 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second floor of the Ferguson Center. Students will learn about the 20-plus departments in the Division of Student Affairs, including University Recreation, the Ferguson Center Student Union and Housing and Residential Communities. Students will also learn how to participate in events, volunteer and get a job on campus. Students who attend the Expo can complete a passport by visiting at least 10 departments’ tables to be eligible for prizes, including a $500 scholarship.
Career Fair Awareness Week will be held Feb. 6-10 at the Ferguson Center. Multiple events will help students with their résumés, networking skills and salary negotiation in preparation for the on-campus career fairs to be held Feb. 15 and Feb. 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bryant Conference Center. A State of the Black Union event will be held on Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Ballroom. The event will present a comprehensive review of black culture at UA. Guests will include Dr. Mark Nelson, vice president for student affairs and vice provost; Dr. Joyce Stallworth, senior associate dean for the College of Education; Tamica Shambly, president of the African-American Graduate Student Association; and Booker T. Forte, founding vice president of the African-American Association (Black Student Union). The presidents of the Black Student Union and the UA chapter of the NAACP will provide a joint statement, and Greek and non-Greek student opinions will be revealed through visual elements. A “BikePalooza” will be held at the Student Recreation Center on Wednesday, Jan. 25, noon-3 p.m., and Thursday, Jan. 26, 2-5 p.m. The BikePalooza will bring together various UA departments, clubs and organizations, as well as off campus groups, to represent and promote safe biking on campus and throughout Tuscaloosa. Representatives from Mercedes-Benz U.S. International will be on campus Feb. 2 at 6 p.m. in 1013 South Engineering Research Center to share information with students about the company’s upcoming full-time hire of engineering and business students. Those hired will work in the company’s body shop, paint shop, Einfuehrung, assembly and business areas. Mercedes-Benz will share information about its new career program and graduate fellowship. A Start Smart salary-negotiation workshop will be held on Feb. 8 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in 309 Ferguson Center. Start Smart is a workshop designed for women but open to everyone. COMMUNITY SERVICE
Students can volunteer to help remodel a homeless shelter on Jan. 26 in the Cottondale, Ala., area. Work includes building a foundation, assembling and installing interior and exterior walls, and laying bricks. Volunteers will also clean out and organize a donation house. The Community Service Center and Habitat for Humanity will host the second House United Habitat for Humanity Build during spring break, March 10-17, in Baldwin County, Ala.
