SEVERE WEATHER POSSIBLE
The National Weather Service indicates the possibility of severe weather for the Tuscaloosa area tonight. Isolated tornadoes are possible, with rain showers and wind expected as the cold front moves through our area. Since severe weather can develop quickly and without warning, please be prepared to immediately move to safety if severe weather occurs. Also, please be familiar with UA’s severe weather guidelines uanews.ua.edu/weather and stay tuned to local weather sources as long as the potential for severe weather lasts. If a tornado warning is issued, immediately move to the lowest level of the nearest building until you are notified that the warning is over.
EVENTS
UA will celebrate the Crimson Tide football team’s recent BCS national championship on Saturday, Jan. 21, at 2 p.m. in Bryant-Denny Stadium. The event will feature the football team and head coach Nick Saban. The celebration will last approximately one hour. Admission is free. Gates open at noon. Seating is first come, first-served. Fans can access the stadium through gates 10-13 and 16-19 for the lower level and gates 5 and 21 for the upper level. UA students with a valid UA Action Card can access the event though gate 31 located at the southeast side of the stadium. Stadium concessions will be available in multiple locations in the stadium’s lower level. The first 30,000 fans entering the stadium will receive a poster of the championship team. Fans can also have their photographs taken with the BCS National Championship trophy in the south end-zone plaza starting at noon. More information: http://uagameday.com.
The Ferguson Center location of the University Supply Store will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 21. The SUPe will give away free posters while they last and will also have new Bama BSC national championship merchandise.
The SOURCE will host Spring Get on Board Day on Tuesday, Jan. 24, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the third floor of the Ferguson Center. Spring Get on Board Day showcases more than 100 student organizations on campus. The event allows students who are not already involved on campus to become familiar with the various resources and opportunities available to them. A “BikePalooza” will be held at the Student Recreation Center on Jan. 24, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; Jan. 25, noon-3 p.m.; and Jan. 26, 2-5 p.m. The BikePalooza will bring together various UA departments, clubs and organizations, as well as off campus groups, to represent and promote safe biking on campus and throughout Tuscaloosa. Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 9 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their research or artistic projects before judges. To participate, an undergraduate student must register his or her project by submitting an application form and abstract describing the project by March 9. Essay submissions to Mental Health Monologues are due no later than Friday, Jan. 20. Mental Health Monologues is a project that collects anonymous essay submissions from students on campus about their personal struggles with mental illness. The submissions are then used as monologues performed by actors during a staged performance to raise awareness of mental health and help erase any stigmas surrounding the illness. The Office of Sustainability strives for a better environment through recycling, reducing consumption and educating others on the importance of sustainability. The Go Green website highlights sustainable projects and provides ways to connect students, faculty, staff and the surrounding communities with “green” initiatives on and off campus. A workshop on law-school admissions will be held on Jan. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in 222 Lloyd Hall. Representatives from law schools will meet with students to explain how the admissions process works behind the scenes. A law-school fair will be held on Jan. 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the ballroom on the third floor of the Ferguson Center. The Division of Student Affairs invites students to the first Student Affairs Expo on Jan. 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the second floor of the Ferguson Center. Students will learn about the 20-plus departments in the Division of Student Affairs, including University Recreation, the Ferguson Center Student Union and Housing and Residential Communities. Students will also learn how to participate in events, volunteer and get a job on campus. Students can get a “passport” upon entrance to the expo. Students who complete their passports by visiting at least 10 tables can enter for a chance to win prizes, including a $500 scholarship.
STUDENT INVOLVEMENT
Applications for membership in the Culverhouse Investment Management Group are due by 5 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 22. CIMG is an investment fund at UA managed by undergraduate students. CIMG provides students with experience in the operation of an investment-management organization, including experience in valuing companies using various research and analyses techniques and actively managing an investment portfolio. Students can honor the life and contributions of Martin Luther King Jr. by participating in the Hands on Tuscaloosa service project on Saturday, Jan. 21, from 9 a.m. until noon. A free lunch will follow at the Student Recreation Center. Student organizations and the UA Community Service Center are hosting the event. Participants will work on projects that include disaster relief and assisting city schools. Check-in on the day of the event will begin at 9 a.m. in the pool parking lot at the Student Recreation Center. All students interested in participating must preregister by noon on Friday, Jan. 20.
