Service projects available for UA fans
Tuscaloosa News – Jan. 5
Students, alumni and supporters of the University of Alabama will have two opportunities to perform a service project in conjunction with Monday’s BCS National Championship Game between the Crimson Tide and LSU. Fans traveling to New Orleans can join LSU supporters Sunday in a service project for the Boys and Girls Club of Southeastern Louisiana. “We’re going there to win a football game, but also to make a positive impact in that community as well,” said Wahnee Sherman, director of UA’s Community Service Center.

Recycling program could return sooner than expected
Tuscaloosa News – Jan. 5
City officials are hopeful that curbside recycling will return soon, especially now that residents are relying on once-a-week garbage collection. The City Council decided in June to expand curbside recycling citywide and make once-a-week collection permanent. Household garbage had been collected twice a week and curbside recycling collection, where offered, was once a week. But when the April 27 tornado wiped out most of the city’s garbage trucks and all of its recycling trucks, the Environmental Services Department had to curtail garbage collection and temporarily eliminated its recycling service. . . . Two additional operations — the University of Alabama Recycling Center at 1115 14th St. and Waste Recycling at 2661 Elm St. — will accept drop-offs of recyclable goods from residents who want to take them there. Tony Johnson, executive director of UA’s Logistics and Support Services, which oversees the Recycling Center, said residential drop-offs began at the site after the April 27 storm and haven’t let up since.

UA graduate student wins free gasoline for a year
Fox 6 (Birmingham) – Jan. 4
A University of Alabama student starts out the new year on a winning note. She won’t have to spend a dime on gas in 2012. Sherlynne Burns, a UA graduate student, won 52 weeks’ worth of gas cards to Kangaroo Express Gas stations.  Burns says the free gas comes at a good time as she is a full-time student and a mother of a 16 year-old.  Burns plans to fill-up before heading to New Orleans this weekend for the BCS National Championship.
