UA’s Circle K club will continue its annual holiday tradition with luminaries on the Quad on Sunday, Dec. 11, at dusk. Circle K members will arrange thousands of luminary candles on the Quad to celebrate the holiday season. Student organizations and local businesses are asked to support the event with their donations of time and money. All proceeds benefit the One Spark Campaign for Jean Dean Reading is Fundamental. The UA National Alumni Association has designed a trip for graduating students and young alumni. Travel with the Tide to Europe May 20-30, 2012. UA students interested in purchasing tickets to the Jan. 9, 2012, BCS National Championship football game have until 5 p.m. today to place themselves on a ticket-request list at http://www.actcard.ua.edu. On Wednesday, Dec. 7, students will be notified whether they are eligible to purchase the tickets. Students eligible to purchase tickets will be able to complete their purchase online through the Intercollegiate Athletics ticket office’s website starting at 8 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 8. The deadline for students to pay for their tickets is Friday, Dec. 9, at 5 p.m.
UA will test UA Alerts and the emergency public address system at noon on Wednesday, Dec. 7. The test of the PA system will coincide with the Tuscaloosa Emergency Management Agency’s test of the outdoor tornado sirens. The test will last about 30 seconds and should not be disruptive. The University uses UA Alerts as its emergency notification system. Students should make sure that their contact information on myBama is updated by logging in to their accounts at https://mybama.ua.edu.
Students who were affected by the April 15 or April 27 tornadoes and who have not yet applied to the UA Acts of Kindness Fund for assistance are encouraged to complete and submit an application to UA’s Department of Human Resources as soon as possible. Students can complete their fall course evaluations online. Log in to http://myBama.ua.edu and click on “Student Opinions of Instruction” in the OIRA Resources box to access course evaluations. The deadline is Dec. 11.
The University Supply Store will hold a UA community appreciation sale Dec. 14-17. The sale will feature 30 percent off all Bama apparel and souvenirs for all UA students, faculty and staff. Previously discounted items and Vera Bradley merchandise are excluded from the sale. Sale hours will be 8 a.m.-5 p.m. on Dec. 14-16 at the Ferguson Center and Tutwiler Hall locations and 7 a.m.-5 p.m. on Dec. 17 at the Ferguson location. Free gift-wrapping will be available. A trade-book sale will be held in the lobby outside the Ferguson location in concurrence with the appreciation sale.

Mental Health Monologues is a project that collects anonymous essay submissions from students on campus about their personal struggles with mental illness. The submissions are then used as monologues performed by actors during a staged performance to raise awareness of mental health and help erase any stigmas surrounding the illness. Students who are interested in submitting their stories can visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/L28VX2V and follow the instructions for submission. Submissions are due no later than Jan. 20, 2012. The Office of Sustainability strives for a better environment through recycling, reducing consumption and educating others on the importance of sustainability. The Go Green website highlights sustainable projects and provides ways to connect students, faculty, staff and the surrounding communities with “green” initiatives on and off campus. This semester, UA students and faculty are using eLearning more than ever before. Consider the following tips to have a successful technology experience through the end of the semester: turn assignments in as soon as possible before deadlines; give the system several seconds to respond to clicks rather than clicking repeatedly; be cautious when making changes to computer setups (browser, Java, or operating system updates) just prior to exams or important due dates; avoid updating to Java 6 update 29. UA has established a 24-hour HALT hotline to allow students, parents or others to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, hazing or any kind of unhealthy behavior. An individual calling the hotline can leave a confidential message with the Office of the Dean of Students. Callers to the hotline are anonymous. Callers are asked to include as much detailed information as possible. The hotline number is 205-348-4258 (HALT).
University resources on harassment, bullying, and diversity and sensitivity training are available online. The University of Alabama is committed to providing an environment that is free from illegal harassment based on race, color, religion, ethnicity, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, age, disability or veteran status. Students are encouraged to review the University’s online training tutorial on harassment at http://training.newmedialearning.com/psh/ua (select the student version) to understand what is inappropriate behavior that should be reported. Details about to whom a student should report harassment are found in the policy located at http://eop.ua.edu/harrassment.html. The Code of Student Conduct at http://policies.ua.edu/conduct.html also prohibits students from engaging in physical abuse, verbal abuse, threats, stalking, intimidation, harassment, sexual misconduct or violence, coercion, and/or other conduct that threatens, harasses or injures a person. Students may file charges under the Code of Student Conduct with the Office of Judicial Affairs.
Students with complaints of harassment against faculty members, graduate assistants, other student employees and staff members should contact the designated harassment resource person in their department, school or college or in the department, school or college in which the alleged offender is employed. The name and location of the designated harassment resource person can be obtained online from the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs’ website at http://eop.ua.edu/persons.html or from the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs. Complaints of harassment against other students should be addressed to the student affairs’ designated harassment resource person. Students may also receive assistance from the Office of Equal Opportunity Programs, 171 Rose Administration Building, 205-348-5855, TDD 205-348-5573. The Counseling Center (http://counseling.ua.edu) and the Women’s Resource Center (http://wrc.ua.edu/index.cfm) are staffed with trained professionals who, in a confidential setting, will help students deal with problems related to harassment or bullying of any type. The University’s Crossroads Community Center (http://crossroads.ua.edu) provides campuswide leadership in areas of cultural programming and intercultural education and facilitates meaningful engagement among students, employees and community. One of its programs, Sustained Dialogue, engages students and other University community members who discuss probing subjects that divide the community (such as race, class, gender) and work toward collective action designed to address these issues. The Division of Student Affairs, the Department of Human Resources, Capstone Alliance’s Safe Zone program and academic units also routinely offer anti-discrimination and diversity sensitivity programs. Students, faculty members and staff are encouraged to participate in the wide range of diverse cultural programs, intercultural education and other educational initiatives that enhance awareness and appreciation of cultural and individual diversity, promote community and prepare students for the global society in which they will live and work.
