UA Hosts Symposium on Communication Skills for Multicultural Environments

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama’s College of Arts and Sciences will host Cross Cultural Perspectives: Teaching and Learning in a Global Society, a one-day symposium on effective communication skills in multicultural environments, Nov. 14 at the Bryant Conference Center on the UA campus.

Clear and informed communication skills are critical to effective and empowering interpersonal relations in today’s diverse communities. Multicultural environments in education, business and community leadership require knowledge of cross-cultural communication and sensitivity to the pitfalls and positive strategies for successful and productive interactions.

This one-day symposium will include keynote addresses from experts in the field who will share strategies and practices that can be applied immediately to interactions in the workplace and community.

Keynote speakers include Dr. Carol Archer, an intercultural communications specialist and author of “The CultureBump Toolkit for Culture and Communication;” Dr. Arthur Dunning, vice chancellor for International Programs and Outreach for the UA system; and Dr. Rebecca Oxford, a professor at Air University in Montgomery.

Cross Cultural Perspective: Teaching and Learning in a Global Society is a joint project with the Biggio Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning at Auburn University. Symposia on cultural communication will be offered in alternate years by The University of Alabama and Auburn University.
