UA Students Lend a Hand in New SGA Sunday Student Service Initiative

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama Student Government Association is holding the first work session of the new SGA Sunday Student Service Initiative Oct. 9, at noon, meeting at the Tuscaloosa Area Volunteer Reception Center, 2512 University Blvd. E., in Alberta City.

The program is offered in response to the high demand from students who want to help the Tuscaloosa community following the devastating April 27 tornado, said Matt Calderone, deputy executive vice president of the UA SGA.

More than 100 volunteers are expected to attend, and they will meet at the TAVRC and then walk to debris removal sites in Alberta City.

The initiative will be held Oct. 9 and following Sundays from noon-4 p.m. throughout the fall semester and into the spring, Calderone said.

At the Oct. 9 event, UA student leaders, including Stephen Swinson, SGA president, and Sarah Hughes of Honors College Assembly, along with Kip Tyner, city councilman for the Alberta area, will give brief remarks.

The UA SGA has spearheaded this community service effort along with the participation of numerous student organizations, campus agencies and the City of Tuscaloosa, Calderone said.

Volunteers will meet at the TAVRC to receive equipment and safety briefings before receiving assignments to a work area within walking distance.
