HOMECOMING

Homecoming continues through Oct. 8 with the theme of “The Tradition Rolls On.” The highlight of the week will be the UA football game against Vanderbilt, which kicks off at 6 p.m. on Oct. 8 and will be televised on ESPNU. This year, a group of first responders will serve as homecoming parade grand marshals in honor of their service following the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa in April. The Anderson Society is selling homecoming T-shirts for $10. Shirts are available at a table in the Ferguson Student Center through Oct. 11, Monday-Friday, 10:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Shirts can also be purchased directly from Anderson Society members. The Anderson Society is a senior leadership honorary that recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to UA.

The third annual homecoming talent show will be held today from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Ferguson Center East Dining Room. More information: Jamaury Ellis at jhellis@crimso.ua.edu.

Students can click here to purchase tickets for the Homecoming Step Show sponsored by the National Pan-Hellenic Council. Tickets can also be purchased at the NPHC homecoming table in the Ferguson Center. Student tickets are $15 with identification. The show will be held in Foster Auditorium on Oct. 7. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. Parking will be limited. Shuttle service will be provided to Foster Auditorium from the soccer-field-parking lot on Fourth Street. The University Supply Store will have special hours for homecoming. On Oct. 7, the SUPe Store tent on the Quad will be open 5-9 pm. On Oct. 8, the Ferguson Center location will be open 9:30 a.m.-5 p.m., the Quad tent will be open 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and the Bryant Museum store will be open 9 a.m.-6 p.m.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

UA has established a 24-hour HALT hotline to allow students, parents or others to report incidents of discrimination, harassment, hazing or any kind of unhealthy behavior. An individual calling the hotline can leave a confidential message with the Office of the Dean of Students. Callers to the hotline are anonymous. Callers are asked to include as much detailed information as possible. The hotline number is 205-348-4258 (HALT).

UA will test UA Alerts and the emergency public address system at 11:55 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The test of the PA system will coincide with the Tuscaloosa Emergency Management Agency’s test of the outdoor tornado sirens. The test will last about 30 seconds and should not be disruptive. The University uses UA Alerts as its emergency notification system. Students should make sure that their contact information on myBama is updated by logging in to their accounts at https://mybama.ua.edu.

The perimeter parking lot located in front of the Child Development Research Center will be closed on Oct. 7 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. to accommodate a homecoming event hosted by the College of Human Environmental Sciences. Students who normally park in this lot should plan to use the perimeter parking lot in the area near the tennis and softball stadiums.

The Student Health Center encourages students to get a flu shot or the FluMist this year. Stop by or make an appointment by calling 348-APPT (2778).

Applications for Parent Ambassadors should be submitted to 132 Burke Hall East by 5 p.m. on Oct. 7. Click here for an application. Students who join Parent Ambassadors build leadership skills, work with other student leaders and professionals on campus and develop professionally. The deadline to apply for Career Connection is Oct. 7. Career Connection is a program developed through UA’s Professional Staff Assembly that connects students with UA professionals who hold similar career interests. Each student establishes a relationship with a UA professional through a short-term job-shadowing process. Students and professionals will be matched according to the students’ fields of study and the professionals’ areas of knowledge. No formal template or timetable exists for the program; students and their assigned professionals determine the manner and length of visits and meetings. Click here to apply. EVENTS

The Student Health Center’s Health Hut is providing flu shots and the FluMist through Oct. 7. Shots are $22 and the FluMist is $33; vaccines are charged directly to student accounts. The annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger kickoff will be Oct. 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Ferguson Center Plaza and Reese Phifer Hall. Beginning at 11 a.m., faculty, staff and students can stop by the plaza and Reese Phifer Hall to donate money toward the person whom they would like to see receive a pie to the face, as well as donate money and food items. Contestants include Dr. Shane Sharpe, dean of the Honors College; Barrett Jones, Crimson Tide offensive lineman; Sarah Hughes, president of the Honors College Assembly; and other campus leaders. The contestant whose jar has the most money at the end of the kickoff will receive a pie in the face on Oct. 12 at noon on the Ferguson Center Plaza. In addition to the kickoff, the BABH campaign will have the Stamp Out Hunger letter-writing campaign on Oct. 10 from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. Volunteers will contact family and friends and request donations for the BABH food drive.

The University Libraries and Gorgas Information Services will hold a workshop on Facebook privacy on Oct. 19 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library. Refreshments will be provided. More information: Nancy Fawley at nefawley@ua.edu or 348-1976.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

UA’s Disaster Relief Internship Program is committed to rebuilding Tuscaloosa while providing students with unique opportunities to receive course credit for their aid in the tornado-relief efforts. Students serve internships with various local agencies involved in the relief effort. Internships are suited to students’ academic backgrounds and prior volunteer and work experiences. The Community Service Center encourages students to get involved in active community service with the Alternative Fall Break. Students will travel to Cordova, Ala., Oct. 27-29 to aid in storm-damage cleanup and tornado-repair efforts. The application deadline for the trip is Oct. 17.
