Emotions of tornado’s aftermath fuel UA performance

…Amir Zaheri, a doctoral student in composition…his ensemble drama “Look Upon These Faces,” which will have its world premiere as the centerpiece of the University of Alabama Opera Theatre’s fall program, “Rebuild This House: The Promise of Moving Forward.” The program will be performed at 7:30 tonight and at 3 p.m. Sunday…The program’s director, Paul Houghtaling, started planning for the annual fall performance with a different idea in mind. But there came a need to respond to the events of April 27…The program features a variety of scenes not only from opera, but also from other musical forms, all under the general theme of rebuilding, loving and hoping for the future…“It should be, hopefully, a very moving experience,” Houghtaling said…

Eight to join Alabama Academy of Honor

Eight people including Gov. Robert Bentley, Georgia Congressman John Lewis and University of Alabama President Robert Witt are to be inducted into the Alabama Academy of Honor on Monday…Witt, 71, was named president of the University of Alabama in 2003. A Connecticut native, Witt was with the University of Texas system for 35 years, including serving as the president of U.T. Arlington and dean of the business school at the university’s campus in Austin. Under his leadership, the University of Alabama’s enrollment has grown 62 percent.

Director Seth Panitch’s love letter to classic comedy and comedians probably would have tossed in an actual jungle-gym of kitchen plumbing, if they could have figured out a way to make actors throw funny…
