Dark Visions Inhabit Paintings of Fred Stonehouse at UA’s Moody Gallery

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — An exhibit of paintings by Fred Stonehouse will be on display from Thursday, Oct. 20, to Thursday, Dec. 1, in The University of Alabama’s Sarah Moody Gallery of Art.

The exhibit is titled “Fred Stonehouse: The Deacon’s Seat.” Stonehouse will also present a lecture on his work at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 19, in 205 Gorgas Library. The exhibit and lecture are free and open to the public.

Stonehouse draws from family stories of psychic visions, ghosts and the “evil eye” to create paintings that inhabit a dream landscape.

A Wisconsin native, he teaches at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. His awards include the Wisconsin Arts Board Grant 2008; Wisconsin Institute of Visual Arts Lifetime Achievement Award, 2007; Joan Mitchell Foundation Individual Artist Grant, 2005/2006; Mary Nohl Artist’s Fellowship, 2005/2006; Mary Nohl Suitcase Grant, 2003/2005; Milwaukee Artist’s Foundation Fellowship; and National Endowment for the Arts, Arts Midwest Fellowship.

His work is in public and private collections including Milwaukee Art Museum; San Jose Art Museum; Tacoma Art Museum; University of Arizona Art Museum,Tucson; Madonna Ciccione, Los Angeles; and Sheryl Crow, Los Angeles.

Stonehouse has been featured in more than 60 solo shows and participated in 144 group exhibitions.This exhibition was organized with support of HS-Howard Scott Gallery of New York and Tory Folliard Gallery of Milwaukee.

The Sarah Moody Gallery of Art is supported by the College of Arts and Sciences and the department of art and art History.
