ANNOUNCEMENTS
Students can check their football privileges for the Sept. 24 game against Arkansas via My Football Ticket on the left side of the Action Card website at http://actcard.ua.edu. Each student must have a count of “1” to be able to be eligible to attend this week’s game. Students who do not have a count of “1” and want to attend the game should add themselves to the waiting list for donated tickets.
Beginning Sept. 23 at 5 p.m., the door to the Ferguson Center computer lab will only be accessible via Action Card swipe. Several informative sessions regarding UA’s new bicycle policy have been scheduled. These forums will give students, faculty and staff an opportunity to discuss bicycle registration, bike-rack placement and policy enforcement. The forums are scheduled as follows: Sept. 20 at 10 a.m. in 312 Ferguson Student Center and 6 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center activity room; and Sept. 21 at 10 a.m. in the Ferguson Center Forum and 6 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center activity room.
The Student Health Center encourages students to get a flu shot or the FluMist this year. Stop by or make an appointment by calling 348-APPT (2778).
UA students, including victims of the April storms, can receive free legal assistance from the UA School of Law Civil Clinic. Legal matters for which students can seek assistance include landlord-tenant disputes, other housing issues, automobile accidents, insurance matters, property matters, contract issues, consumer problems and even some municipal violations. Students can call 348-4960 for appointments.
Career Connection is a program developed through UA’s Professional Staff Assembly that connects students with UA professionals who hold similar career interests. Each participant establishes a relationship with a UA professional through a short-term job shadowing process. Students and professionals are matched according to the students’ fields of study and the professionals’ areas of knowledge. Click here for more information and an application. Writing Center consultants are available in Java City for drop-in appointments on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. during the fall semester. Java City is located on the first floor of Gorgas Library.
The University Libraries and Gorgas Information Services are introducing a series of workshops for undergraduate students. The first will be held Sept. 21, 1-2 p.m., at 205 Gorgas Library and will focus on Twitter as an information source. Refreshments will be provided. The sign-up period for the High Tide Club is underway. High Tide Club is the best way for students to experience Alabama football in the upper deck. Members have reserved seating in the upper bowl for every home game. Additional benefits include a free concession coupon for all home games for the first 1,000 HTC members who enter the stadium; easier access to the stadium through the High Tide Club express entrance at Gate 30; an exclusive tailgate, membership wristband and free T-shirt for the LSU game; an opportunity to win $500 book scholarships; and other giveaways and prizes throughout the season. UA students can baby-sit for other UA students who have children in exchange for earning community service hours recognized by the University. Participants in the Sitters for Service program have the opportunity to earn 20, 30 or 40 hours of community service during the semester. Students can meet and talk with job recruiters at two upcoming career fairs, both to be held in the Sellers Auditorium at the Bryant Conference Center. The Technical and Engineering Career Fair will be held Sept. 21 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the General Interest and Business Career Fair will be held Sept. 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Students can show how they use UA libraries and have the opportunity to win prizes. Student teams are invited to make three-minute movies promoting UA library resources and services. Movies can be in any style. Click here for more information. Registration deadline is Sept. 29 at 5 p.m.

The Honors College Assembly will sell chicken and biscuits on Sept. 28 from 7:15 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. outside Bidgood Hall, Tutwiler Hall and the Northeast Commuter Parking Lot. All proceeds are being donated to help rebuild houses destroyed by the April 27 tornado.
The third annual homecoming talent show will be held on Oct. 4 on the steps of the Gorgas Library. A mandatory meeting for everyone who wants to participate will be held Sept. 29. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
UA students can walk in the shoes of a local nonprofit administrator or CEO by participating in the eight-week Nonprofit Protégé Program. Throughout the fall semester, protégés are expected to arrange weekly meetings with their mentors. Participants are often invited to attend board meetings, experience staff and committee meetings, and visit with potential financial donors. This program is not an internship experience; rather, it is an opportunity for students to directly shadow a nonprofit administrator or CEO. A limited number of students will be selected and matched to work with an organization leader from agencies in the Tuscaloosa County area. An application is due by 5 p.m. on Sept. 23 to the Community Service Center in 346 Ferguson Center. Click here for more information and to download the application.
UA’s Disaster Relief Internship Program is committed to rebuilding Tuscaloosa while providing students with unique opportunities to receive course credit for their aid in the tornado-relief efforts. Students serve internships with various local agencies involved in the relief effort. Internships are suited to students’ academic backgrounds and prior volunteer and work experiences.
