UA receives highest ranking ever from U.S. News & World Report magazine
The University of Alabama posts its highest ranking ever on a list of America’s top schools. U.S. News and World Report magazine lists the Capstone as the 75th best college or university.

UA study puts dollar amount on April 27th tornado

According to a new University of Alabama study, the storms caused an estimated $228 million in property damage. The study says the economic impact of the recovery is roughly 3.2 billion dollars by the end of 2012.
Alabama poverty rate hits 17.3 percent

…The numbers released Tuesday are “indicative” of a long standing situation in Alabama, said Annette Watters, project manager for the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Alabama. She said the state has had a poverty rate higher than the national average for decades, and it’s not necessarily reflective only of the current economic situation. “It’s the result of a continuation of a situation that has been in the making on the ground for a long time,” she said…
HCA launches documentary series

The Honors College Assembly’s kicks off their free documentary film series tonight with “At the Edge of Russia,” in the Ferguson Center Theater at 7 p.m. “At the Edge of Russia,” directed by Michal Marczak, was a winner of the HBO Documentary Films Emerging Artist Award. The movie is about life on one of the few remaining Russian outposts on the Artic Ocean. Each soldier stationed at the outpost has his own unique story…
READ Alabama undergoes expansion, adds three schools

READ Alabama began its second year by adding three new schools to its volunteer focus and has a satellite program in progress, with a total expansion to six schools in the program in the near future. “We are here for the good things — football, tailgating, etc. — but we are also here to help improve the negative things…in our case, the illiteracy rate in Tuscaloosa,” said Colby Leopard, director and founder of READ Alabama (Readiness, Education and Development)…The students are paired with an elementary age child with reading difficulties. The pairs work together throughout the semester on reading comprehension and speed…The volunteers can be students of any class standing, but the majority of the volunteers tend to be freshmen, due to the advertising at Honors College Assembly and in dorms on campus…
ROTC program provides leadership opportunities for UA students

Through a maturing process four years long, the University of Alabama’s Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) has been helping young men and women prepare to be officers in the military for over 150 years…Lieutenant Colonel Jim Shaver, professor of military science, said the program is always looking for young men and women who want to serve their country and who are looking for great leadership opportunities within the ROTC. “We’re looking for three things in our cadets: scholars, athletes and leaders,” Shaver said. “Of course, cadets must be physically fit, but we like for them to also excel academically and have leadership experience.”…
Aycock to be honored for reform efforts

The Alabama Citizens for Constitutional Reform Foundation will honor Johnnie Aycock of Tuscaloosa during the fifth annual Bailey Thomson Awards Luncheon on Sept. 23. Aycock, the retired president of the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, will receive the Thomas Corts Citizen Educator of the Year Award…Thomson, an award-winning journalist and later a journalism professor at the University of Alabama, is credited with helping start the reform movement…
