Local Marine Corps League Detachment Partners with UA through Scholarship Support

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Students who are Marine Corps veterans or who have a family connection to someone who is currently serving or has served in the United States Marine Corps will soon be able to apply for a new scholarship at The University of Alabama. The Johnny Micheal Spann Detachment of The Marine Corps League located in Tuscaloosa has recently established an endowed scholarship for Marines or their family members in tribute to their service in the Marine Corps and to the country.

The scholarship is open to graduates of West Alabama high schools who have served in the Marines or who have a personal family connection to the U.S. Marine Corps, and who are full-time undergraduates at UA.  “Our goal is to provide meaningful support to Marine veterans or their family members as they further their education,” said Loren Horn, commandant of the Johnny Micheal Spann Detachment. “We also hope to inspire young students from families of Marines in the hope that they might one day be interested in becoming Marines themselves.”

“The timing of this scholarship is significant, as we continue to increase support for our students who are veterans, and enhance the services we provide these students while they complete their degrees,” said Pam Parker, vice president for advancement at UA. As a part of this expansion of services, UA is developing a center that will provide a variety of services tailored to meet veteran student needs.

“Our detachment is pleased to partner with UA to provide support to a special group of local citizens who have contributed much to their country,” said Horn.
