C&IS, Women’s Resource Center to Host Screening, Discussion of CNN Documentary at UA

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Just days after its worldwide premiere, a CNN documentary, “Latino in America 2: In Her Corner,” will be the subject of a campus-wide discussion at The University of Alabama.

The viewing and discussion will take place Thursday, Sept. 29 at 3:30 p.m. in the AIME Building, room 111.

The College of Communication and Information Sciences’ Diversity Forum is teaming with the UA Women’s Resource Center to sponsor the event, as part of the University’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month.

“Latino in America 2: In Her Corner” is the latest installment in CNN’s award-winning “In America” documentary series.

This hour-long documentary follows Marlen Esparza’s journey to the 2012 Olympics, the first games to allow women to compete in boxing. She is smart enough to get full academic scholarships to top colleges, but postponed university because she and her working-class, Mexican-American family dream she will be among the first women to represent the U.S. in boxing within the Olympics.

After viewing the documentary, Dr. George Daniels, associate professor of journalism, will lead a discussion about the program and some of the issues it raises about Latinas in athletics and educational attainment.

“This program makes an important contribution to our discussion of race and gender issues in the media,” said Daniels. “As media practitioners, we are challenged to reflect all aspects of the American experience and far too few of our news stories spotlight the disparities involving female athletes.”

The C&IS  Diversity Forum is a cross-disciplinary initiative for discussing, researching and engaging in creative activities that address the intersection of diversity in all forms (such as race, class, culture, gender, ability, sexuality, immigration status and religion) with all types of communication.
