ANNOUNCEMENTS

Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley has passed a proclamation declaring Sept. 2 to be College Colors Day in the state. All UA faculty, staff and students are encouraged to wear crimson and white on Friday.

Zimride is a ride-sharing network that enables UA students to find friends and classmates going to and from campus, away games and home. This new campus carpool system will help reduce parking congestion on campus and ease the financial burden of gas prices. To sign up for Zimride and connect with other UA students, log onto http://www.zimride.ua.edu.

Returning students who wish to use a laptop or mobile device must complete a simple, one-time registration. Users will be prompted to complete this registration on their first attempts to open a Web browser. They must enter their myBama usernames and passwords, accept the user agreement and restart their devices to complete the registration process. For information regarding the registration of game consoles, click here. ResNet users will be prompted to register their desktops as well as their laptops and mobile devices. STUDENT AFFAIRS

UA students can learn more about various organizations on campus during Get on Board day, Aug. 31, at the Ferguson Plaza from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Get on Board day is designed to get students involved in some of the 350 campus organizations by offering a “one-stop shop” for exploring what the organizations have to offer.

The sign-up period for the High Tide Club is underway. High Tide Club is the best way for students to experience Alabama football in the upper deck. Members have reserved seating in the upper bowl for every home game. Additional benefits include a free concession coupon for all seven home games for the first 1,000 HTC members who enter the stadium; easier access to the stadium through the High Tide Club express entrance at Gate 30; an exclusive tailgate, free T-shirt and membership wristband for the LSU game; an opportunity to win $500 book scholarships; and other giveaways and prizes throughout the season. The Crimson White will host an open house on Sept. 1 at 6 p.m. at the Office of Student Media next to Reese Phifer Hall on University Boulevard. Students who are interested in joining the Crimson White staff can meet the editors and learn about the newspaper’s operations. Opportunities are available in writing, photography, design, graphics, Web development, copy editing, video and social-media management. Pizza and drinks will be provided. Applications are due by noon on Sept. 4 for membership in the Student Alumni Association, an organization aimed at creating partnerships between current UA students and alumni. Members serve the campus and community through various projects and events, including a Halloween festival, Relay-for-Life and a charity golf tournament. Students searching for on-campus employment can attend a free workshop from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Sept. 13 at the Sylvester Jones Resource Center in 336 Ferguson Student Center. Attendees will learn how to navigate the UA Human Resources’ website and what to include on their résumés. No registration is required. Students can receive critiques of their résumés by attending a “Short and Sweet” résumé review either on Sept. 14 or 15 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Sylvester Jones Resource Center in 336 Ferguson Student Center. First Year Council applications are available. The First Year Council is the 50-person body of freshmen responsible for passing legislation to improve the lives of first-year students. Applications are available at http://sga.ua.edu and due Sept. 19 by 5 p.m. in the Student Government Association office at 231 Ferguson Student Center.

UA students can baby-sit for other UA students who have children in exchange for earning community service hours recognized by the University. Participants in the Sitters for Service program have the opportunity to earn 20, 30 or 40 hours of community service during the semester. The UA chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness will have an interest meeting at 7 p.m. on Sept. 6 in 351 Gordon Palmer Hall. Free pizza will be provided. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Students can register at http://www.volunteer.ua.edu/hands.cfm to participate in a Hands on Tuscaloosa service day on Sept. 2 and Sept. 10. Students will work with various organizations to help Tuscaloosa recover from the tornado as well as work on other community needs. UA students enrolled for the fall semester have the opportunity to earn up to 6 hours of academic credit by participating in internships related to the tornado-relief effort. Those interested can click here for a form. More information: uadrip@gmail.com.

ATHLETICS

Students interested in joining the UA women’s rowing team can click here for more information and a questionnaire. Every year members of the UA student body with no prior rowing experience join the Tide and in as little as six weeks are competing for Alabama as an NCAA Division I student-athlete.
