ANNOUNCEMENTS

UA faculty, staff and students are invited to write their thoughts and memories of the April 27 tornado and place them in remembrance boxes located at Gorgas Library, Ferguson Center, Bidgood Hall, the Rec Center, Shelby Hall, Gordon Palmer Hall and the Crimson Ride Hub. UA will archive those memories along with photos, videos and print coverage of the days that followed the storm. This activity is in conjunction with the Sunday, Aug. 28 event to remember the impact the tornado had on the community. UA students and employees are invited to gather around Palmer Lake at 7:30 p.m. on that date for a service to remember the impact of the tornado, recall UA’s response to that tragedy and then celebrate moving forward together as a UA family. During the event, the University will present five awards. The annual Acts of Kindness Heroes Award honors students, employees, alumni and members of the community who have made a significant difference in the lives of others. A reception at Ferguson Plaza, featuring food from Bama Dining and some of the restaurants damaged or destroyed by the storm, will follow the service. In case of rain, the program will move to the Ferguson Center ballroom. Palmer Lake is located behind Lakeside Dining.

Incoming freshmen and transfer students are encouraged to participate in the remaining activities of Week of Welcome, including today’s convocation at 6 p.m. at Foster Auditorium where they will meet fellow classmates and kick off the beginning of the 2011-12 academic year. Refreshments at the Malone-Hood Plaza will follow the convocation. For more information and a complete list of WOW events, click here. For a virtual schedule, click here. The Student Government Association, Transportation Services, and RHC have worked together to implement a new way for students to save money and reduce their carbon footprint. Zimride is a ride sharing network which enables UA students to find friends and classmates going to and from campus, away games, and home. This new campus carpool system will help reduce parking congestion on campus as well as ease the financial burden of gas prices. To sign up for Zimride and connect with other UA students, log onto www.zimride.ua.edu.

Returning students who wish to use a laptop or mobile device must complete a simple, one-time registration. Protect yourself and your property by becoming informed and using good judgment. Always lock up valuable items. Lock your dorm or apartment door, even when you are home. Lock your car. Lock your bike. Use a locker and lock at the Student Recreation Center. If you work in a University office, lock your purse and other valuables in a cabinet or drawer. It takes practically no time to lock up, even if you are just leaving for a moment. University Police recommend that during school breaks you take computers, stereos and other valuables home with you. For more information on preventing theft, refer to the UA Safer Living Guide.
