ANNOUNCEMENTS

UA will host a candlelight memorial service for the six students who died in the April 27 tornado at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 5 on the steps of Gorgas Library. UA President Robert E. Witt, Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox and SGA Presidents Grant Cochran (2011-12) and James Fowler (2010-11) will speak at the service.

UA will hold three commencement ceremonies Aug. 5 and 6 to award degrees to its spring and summer graduates. UA will broadcast its commencement ceremonies live over the Internet on Aug. 5-6. The webcasts will be archived and available for viewing for approximately 30 days following the ceremonies. Commencement ceremonies will also be shown in their entirety on local television on select dates. Click here for complete information.

UA will test UA Alerts and the emergency public address system at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 3. The test of the PA system will coincide with the Tuscaloosa Emergency Management Agency’s test of the outdoor tornado sirens. The test will last about 30 seconds and should not be disruptive.

The University uses UA Alerts as its emergency notification system. UA Alerts simultaneously sends voice calls and text messages to the campus community via an employee’s or student’s cellphone and emails to an employee’s or a student’s myBama account. In an emergency, an email will be sent to the user’s myBama account.

Students should make sure that their contact information on myBama is updated. To view and make changes to their information online, including updating phone numbers, students can log in to their myBama accounts at mybama.ua.edu.

Gorgas Library will remain open until 2 a.m. on Aug. 3 and 4.

The UA football team’s annual Fan Day will be Aug. 7. The team will hold an open practice in Bryant-Denny Stadium from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Players and coaches will be available for autographs immediately after the practice on the field. Beginning at 1 p.m., students can register for Crimson Chaos, and all fans can register for the Crimson Tide Rewards program outside of gate 5 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Fans may enter the stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m. at the northwest spiral (gate 5) and occupy the lower bowl (sections A-N). The open practice, which is slated to start at 2:30 p.m., is scheduled to last approximately two hours. At the conclusion of practice, those wishing to participate in Fan Day will enter the field through gate 46 and exit via gate 5. Fans who do not want to view practice but who want to start lining up early for the autographs can do so beginning at 1:30 p.m. Expect traffic to be congested. Looking for a way to help new freshmen and their families feel welcome on our campus? Volunteer for Move-in Days, Aug. 12-14 and Aug. 20-21. Individual students and student organizations also get “perks” for completing one or more volunteer shifts.

Beginning Aug. 8, Tuscaloosa Transit, in partnership with Crimson Ride, will provide a new route from the downtown Intermodal Facility at 601 23rd Ave. to the UA campus and back. The bus will run a complete route each half hour from 5 a.m. until 6 p.m. each Monday through Friday during the year except on holidays. UA students, faculty and staff can park free of charge at the downtown facility and ride the bus free of charge with a UA Action Card. For route details, visit http://crimsonride.ua.edu.

Margaret Drive will close at 6 p.m. on Aug. 3 and reopen before 7 a.m. on Aug. 4 as part of the repaving project of Hackberry Lane between University Boulevard and Campus Drive. The paving project on Hackberry Lane north of University Boulevard will be completed, and that section of Hackberry will be fully open by Aug. 8. Hackberry Lane south of University Boulevard will have one lane blocked off at the corner of University Boulevard from Aug. 8 to Aug. 11 to install a storm drain and line. Flagmen will be present to help direct traffic.

Construction of sewer lines will affect traffic in the area of Wallace Wade Avenue and Sixth Street through Aug. 15. During this time, the normal entry points for the northwest stadium lot and the Wallace Wade commuter lot will remain accessible, but traffic may be slowed due to the presence of workmen. Please adjust your travel plans accordingly.
