UA Alumni, Faculty, Students Helping New York-based Alfred Dunner in Dressing Up! Tuscaloosa Event

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — University of Alabama alumni, students, faculty and staff are teaming up for Dressing Up! Tuscaloosa, an event to give out thousands of donated Alfred Dunner women’s garments to those affected by the April 27 tornado.

New York-based apparel manufacturer Alfred Dunner donated 24,000 new women’s garments to give to victims of the April 27 tornado. The garments will be distributed June 9-13 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Central High School. Consumers will need to bring a form of i.d., such as a driver’s license, with a home address listed stating that she lives in an affected area, or bring registration papers from FEMA, Temporary Emergency Services or Red Cross. Each woman who lives in a tornado affected area will be eligible to receive several outfits.

Students in the department of clothing, textiles and interior design will help set up the clothing displays, replenish merchandise and serve as personal shoppers.

“We want each woman to have a personal guide to take her through the clothes and dressing rooms,” said Babs Davis, instructor in the UA College of Human Environmental Sciences. “We want to give them the feel of a high-end department store and to make it a relaxing experience.”

Davis is serving as a volunteer coordinator for the College but is also using this project to teach students about retail management, making this a true service-learning venture.

“We’ll be setting up retail displays, keeping up with inventory and restocking and replenishing merchandise,” Davis said. “With 30,000 pieces generously donated by Alfred Dunner, that’s going to be an important challenge.”

Dressing Up! Tuscaloosa is an initiative of Alfred Dunner, Zeta Beta Tau fraternity at UA, the UA College of Human Environmental Sciences and MeetUP for Change.
