TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — “Discovering Alabama” earned two Emmy Awards in the 2011 National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences’ Southeast competition for the program “Discovering Alabama: Oil Spill.”
The program explores the trauma and uncertainty imposed on humans, animals and ecosystems by the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill that began in April 2010 and continues to this day.
“The impact of this tragedy will be with us for a long time,” said Dr. Doug Phillips, host and executive producer. “We felt it necessary to explore the consequences from a natural history perspective and our own, uniquely Alabama perspective.”
The “Discovering Alabama” series is a production of the Alabama Museum of Natural History, The University of Alabama, in cooperation with the Alabama Center for Public Television and Radio and Alabama Public Television. In addition to Phillips, Center for Public Televsion and Radio producer Wendy Reed, “Discovering Alabama” producer Roger Reid and Barry Brooks of Brooks Audio Production were honored.
This is the second year in a row the series has been honored. In 2010, “Discovering Alabama” was awarded an Emmy for the program “Discovering Alabama: Alabama in Space.”
