GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

The official mobile application for UA is now available at the App Store. The suite of apps provides instant access to the campus directory, map, news and sports, as well as class schedules, library catalogs and more. More information: click here. 

Students on campus during the summer should be aware of the following temporary traffic changes. Contact UA project manager Bill Parker at 205-348-7574, 205-529-3101 or bparker@fa.ua.edu with questions.

 

  • A section of Hackberry Lane will close to traffic on May 9 for utility work and reopen on Aug. 12. The section that will be closed is the portion from the intersection of Hackberry Lane and University Boulevard up to the intersection of Hackberry Lane and Margaret Drive.
  • The intersection of Margaret Drive and Hackberry Lane will be closed May 9-27.
  • From May 9 to June 16, the connector that runs between Devotie Drive and Hackberry Lane just south of Gordon Palmer Hall will be closed to normal traffic and available for emergency vehicle and faculty and staff uses only.
  • Due to the high volume of traffic using the connector on the south side of Gordon Palmer Hall from May 9 to June 16, the Psychology Clinic parking area south of Gordon Palmer Hall will be closed. People visiting the clinic should use the parking area on the north side of Gordon Palmer Hall. Handicapped parking behind Nott Hall, Lloyd Hall, Smith Hall and W.B. Jones Hall will remain available at all times.

 

Students who sign up for the GUARDIAN program can use their cellphones to notify the UA Police Department at the touch of a single button if they need emergency assistance. To enroll in the program, visit http://mybama.ua.edu and select the GUARDIAN link. There is no charge to enroll or use the program. For additional safety procedures and services, read the Safer Living Guide at the UAPD website.

STUDENT AFFAIRS

The Student Government Association is seeking students to participate in Capstone Connect as mentors for the incoming freshman class. More information: McKay Cleveland.

ACADEMIC AFFAIRS

Applications for the Bernard Osher Foundation Re-entry Scholarships administered through the College of Continuing Studies are due April 29. Applicants must be at least 25 years of age and have experienced a cumulative gap in their education of five or more years prior to re-entering the University in the fall of 2010 or later. Multiple $2,500 tuition scholarships will be awarded. Applications are available online at http://www.OsherScholarship.ua.edu. More information: 348-0089.

Art to Life is a service-learning course in the Honors College. Students interested in storytelling, art therapy, video production or Alzheimer’s research have an opportunity to contribute to the quality of life for dementia patients and their caregivers. Students will piece together a patient’s life story through interviews, family albums and other materials to produce a DVD that will continue the patient’s therapy. Students receive 3-4 credit hours and may volunteer in Tuscaloosa or Marion, Ala. More information: Meg McCrummen.

EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT 

Alabama Arts for AIDS will be held today at 7:30 p.m. in Morgan Auditorium. The concert features an hour of song and dance and is produced by the student-outreach group (Celebration!) in the department of theatre and dance. More information: Laura Ballard.

Graduate Parent Support will host a Summer Camp Expo at the softball fields and tennis courts on April 29 for students who are parents and for families in the Tuscaloosa community. Students who are part of GPS can watch a softball game and have a free picnic after the expo. More information: Cori Perdue.

The UA student chapter of the American Chemical Society will host a carnival on April 29 on the lawn area between Shelby Hall and the Science and Engineering Complex. Students can play games for various prizes and throw a pie at a professor. Students can visit the Shelby Hall rotunda this week to decide which professor will be pied. Popcorn and liquid-nitrogen ice cream will be sold. More information: Leslie Gentry

The Every Woman Book Club will meet at noon on April 28 at the University Club to discuss “Commencement” by J. Courtney Sullivan. Click here for more information and to make reservations.

The annual UA in D.C. program coordinated by the Career Center and the National Capital alumni chapter will take place at the Van Scoyoc Associates building in Washington, D.C., on June 21. The program brings UA students and alumni together for networking and shared interests. More information: Tiffany Goodin.

UA TOMS is hosting a shoe drive until the end of the semester. Collection boxes for new and gently used shoes can be found in Alston Hall, Bidgood Hall, Little Hall, the Student Recreation Center and the University Supply Store. The collected shoes will be donated to United Way of West Alabama. Volunteers can register on Service Learning Pro http://slpro.ua.edu for more information.

Homegrown Alabama farmers market will accept EBT. The market kicks off the 2011 season on May 5 with a Cinco de Mayo celebration and will continue each Thursday through Oct. 27 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Canterbury Episcopal Chapel lawn on Hackberry Lane between Bryant Drive and University Blvd. An on-site machine will be available to transfer EBT-SNAP funds into tokens with the Homegrown Alabama label. Tokens can be used to purchase fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, meat, fish, poultry, dairy products, maple and honey products, and seeds and plants that produce foods. Tokens cannot be refunded but can be used at any Homegrown Alabama farmers market throughout the 2011 season or any season thereafter. Click here for more information about the market.
