TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama College of Engineering will host a series of camps this summer for students interested in science, mathematics and engineering.

Computer Science Camps

UA’s department of computer science will host a three- week series of computer science camps for rising sophomores through seniors. Students will learn to program a computer in several contexts, such as robotics control and smartphone programming, while studying multiple topics of computer science.

The first week of camp, June 6-10, will provide an introduction to programming with Java, where students learn to program video games; week two, June 13-17, will focus on robotics; and week three, June 20-24, will focus on Android smartphone application development. The camps will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Students have the option of commuting or staying in the residence halls throughout the week.

The registration deadline is April 22. Register at http://www.cs.ua.edu/outreach/camps/.

For additional computer science camp information, contact Dr. Jeff Gray, associate professor of computer science, at 205/348-2847 or gray@cs.ua.edu.

SITE Program

The Student Introduction to Engineering, or SITE, program is designed specifically for rising juniors and seniors in high school. Two weeklong sessions will be offered in the summer. The first session is scheduled for July 10-15, and the second will be July 17-22. Approximately 40 students will be selected to participate in each session.

SITE students live in residence halls and engage in teaming exercises. They attend mini-courses in mathematics, engineering, computer science and English. They will also build lightweight airplanes as a design project.

The registration deadline is May 1. Register at http://www.site.eng.ua.edu/.

For additional SITE information, contact Lynsey Dill, coordinator of engineering student recruitment, at 205/348-2547 or ldill@eng.ua.edu.

In 1837, The University of Alabama became one of the first five universities in the nation to offer engineering classes. Today, UA’s fully accredited College of Engineering has more than 2,700 students and more than 100 faculty. In the last eight years, students in the College have been named USA Today All-USA College Academic Team members, Goldwater scholars, Hollings scholars and Portz scholars.
