Housing and Residential Communities is hiring summer employees. Positions include orientation manager, orientation assistants, conference manager, conference assistants, summer assistant community directors and summer resident advisers. Nominations for the 2011 Capstone Heroes award must be submitted to the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership at 355 Ferguson Student Center or e-mailed to Josh Burford at burfo003@sa.ua.edu by 4 p.m. on March 7. UA faculty, staff, students, friends and community members are invited to submit nominations for individuals or groups who inspire and challenge the UA community to exhibit the principles of integrity within the Capstone Creed. Nomination forms are available at http://leadership.ua.edu/capstonehero.cfm. The Division of Student Affairs will present the awards in March as part of the sixth annual celebration of the Capstone Creed.
Students are invited to submit nominations for the Penny Allen Award. The nomination deadline is March 11. The award recognizes one UA student and one UA faculty or staff member who have made a significant contribution to student life at the University. Criteria, in order of importance, include service and dedication to students, leadership activities, professional and other activities, and lack of past recognition. Student nominees must also be incoming juniors or seniors and have GPAs of at least 3.0. Nomination forms are available at http://ferguson.ua.edu/pennyallenaward.cfm. The School of Social Work and the Alabama Union Board of Governors established the award in honor of the late Sara Bell Penrod “Penny” Allen, a former chair of the School of Social Work undergraduate program.
The 2012 Campus Master Plan Update process is underway. The University community is invited to participate in the planning process, beginning with an online survey. Applications are now available for the 2011-12 class of Documenting Justice, a nationally unique, two-semester course in documentary filmmaking. The course gives UA students of all majors opportunities to explore social justice issues in Alabama or around the world through the creation of original, nonfiction films. Applications are due March 11, but early submittal is recommended. While the course is designed for non-film majors, those with production experience are also encouraged to apply. Undergraduate credit for Documenting Justice is available through telecommunication and film, anthropology, New College and Honors College. Graduate credit is available for law students and through telecommunication and film. UA undergraduate students graduating in May are invited to nominate a teacher from their high schools for the Capstone Inspiring Educator Award. The award recognizes U.S. high school teachers who have inspired UA students to achieve their academic and career goals through outstanding teaching, mentoring and support. Winners will be recognized each year during UA Commencement in spring. Nominations are due by April 1; applications can be found at http://inspiringteacher.ua.edu. The Student Government Association and Intercollegiate Athletics have joined together to offer a unique opportunity for UA students who join the Crimson Tide Rewards program. Students who are in the top 15 percent in points and who have attended a minimum of 30 events will be eligible to purchase 2011 football tickets without going through the student ticket sale in the summer. Intercollegiate Athletics will tally student points after the baseball game on May 8 and notify those students who are eligible to purchase the tickets. The Honors College Assembly encourages students with ideas about fostering change, improving the campus or improving the community to connect with “Make It Happen.” Make it Happen seeks to aid emerging student leaders in implementing ideas through various resources and potential funding allocations. Lock it up. Personal safety starts with you. Protect yourself and your property by becoming informed and using good judgment. Always lock up valuable items. Lock your dorm or apartment door, even when you are home. Lock your car. Lock your bike. Use a locker and lock at the Student Recreation Center. If you work in a University office, lock your purse and other valuables in a cabinet or drawer. It takes practically no time to lock up, even if you are just leaving for a moment. University Police recommend that during school breaks you take computers, stereos and other valuables home with you. For more information on preventing theft, refer to the UA Safer Living Guide.
University Recreation is offering a spring break personal training special to help students in their efforts to pursue healthier lifestyles. Students can sign up for 12 sessions plus one free nutritional consultation session or an extra personal training session for $245. Students can sign up for the special through March 11 at the Student Recreation Center. EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT
Eta Sigma Gamma and Delta Sigma Phi present “Ask the Sexperts” on March 3 at 6:30 p.m. in 10 Alston Hall. Professionals will be available to answer questions about sexual health. Free refreshments will be provided. More information: James Rodgers.
Delta Zeta and Zeta Beta Tau will sponsor a cookout to raise money for muscular dystrophy research on March 5 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the ZBT sorority house. Tickets are $5 in advance and $7 at the door. To purchase tickets or for more information: Megan Kaple.
Students can register to participate in the Holiday Hustle 5K race every day from noon to 2 p.m. up until the day of the event on March 5. UA Sport Clubs and Housing and Residential Communities will have registration tables at the Ferguson Student Center and the Student Recreation Center during those times. Participants will receive free T-shirts and race bags.
In celebration of African-Heritage History Month, items from the “Black Americana” collection, a part of the “A.S. Williams III Americana Collection,” are on display in Gorgas Library in the Pearce Foyer and the Williams Room (301 Gorgas). Portraits by African-American artist Edwin Augustus Harleston (1882-1931) are also on display in the Williams Room. More information: Dr. Nancy DuPree.
Throughout April, the UA Women’s Resource Center will display the “Healing the Wounded Heart” art exhibit in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Students affected by violence, both directly and indirectly, are invited to create a “heART” piece for the exhibit. Through the wounded heart program, survivors and those who work with survivors have an opportunity to use art as a therapeutic device to express the influence of violence and the strength gained through healing. Each participant will receive a wooden heart as a canvas for expression. The Women’s Resource Center will begin distributing the hearts on March 1. The finished pieces will be collected on March 30 for display. Participants can get a heart from the Women’s Resource Center. To participate, contact Maria Perez-Fisher at 348-5040.
Local student artists may play their original music during a 12-hour music festival, Tuscapalooza, on WVUA-FM 90.7 on April 3 from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m. Artists will receive a time slot between 30 minutes to one hour. Applications are due on March 7 at 5 p.m. at 288 Reese Phifer Hall or via e-mail to wvua@sa.ua.edu. People can also apply online at http://thecapstone.ua.edu. The Student Alumni Association and the Beta Delta chapter of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity will host the annual RISE and Shine Charity Golf Tournament on April 15. Proceeds will benefit UA’s RISE School for exceptional children and their typically developing peers. A small portion of the proceeds will also fund two student-leadership scholarships awarded annually by the SAA. Creative Campus is seeking participants for its Artistry on Wheels show to be held on April 9. The show celebrates the intersection of art and machinery and features a competition between students from The University of Alabama, The University of Alabama at Birmingham, Shelton State Community College and Stillman College. The final viewing of “War Don Don” will be held March 21 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center Theater.
