Author addresses students as part of UA’s national women’s history celebration

Education advocate Ethel Hall spoke Monday afternoon to students and faculty at the University of Alabama’s School of Social Work. Her message: “Anything you want to do badly enough, you can do.” The lecture concluded UA’s celebration of National Women’s History Month. Hall talked about her life experiences and how she overcame poverty and racial discrimination to become the first black person to lead the Alabama State Board of Education. She also helped launch the Alabama Reading Initiative, a reading program that is in use throughout the state. Lucinda Lee Roff, interim dean of the UA School of Social Work, invited Hall to come to UA to speak and celebrate the recent publication of her memoir, “My Journey: A Memoir of the First African-American To Preside Over the Alabama Board of Education.” The book documents Hall’s life and achievements…went on to become the first African-American doctorate graduate of UA’s School of Social Work…After the lecture, Roff officially renamed the school’s annual celebration the Dr. Ethel Hall African American Heritage Celebration and presented her with the school’s “Trailblazer Award.”…Hall is an associate professor emerita of the school…

Ex-Ten Commandments judge may run for president

Former Alabama Supreme Court Chief Justice Roy Moore, known as the “Ten Commandments judge,” says he’s considering seeking the Republican presidential nomination…Retired University of Alabama political scientist William Stewart said he has been following Moore’s career for years and it wouldn’t surprise him if Moore were to get into the presidential race. “It would give him a platform for his speaking,” Stewart said. “He’s a very talented orator and reminds me of the old timey style of speaking. ” Stewart said he doesn’t think Moore would have much of a chance of winning, but that running would allow him to appear on televised debates and panel discussions to spread his message.
UA prepares for graduation

Highly decorated Girl Scout plans to attend UA

She has earned her Silver Award and now she is going for her Gold Award and that is the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. A senior at Starkville High School, Shanice has always wanted to work with children. Next fall she’ll be attending the University of Alabama to further her studies but plans on returning each spring to host the camp…
