The Student Government Association and Intercollegiate Athletics have joined together to offer a unique opportunity for UA students who join the Crimson Tide Rewards program. Students who are in the top 15 percent in points and who have attended a minimum of 30 events will be eligible to purchase 2011 football tickets without going through the student ticket sale in the summer. Intercollegiate Athletics will tally student points after the baseball game on May 8 and notify those students who are eligible to purchase the tickets. Students can visit http://www.crimsonrewards.com to register. Their cards will be available at the next home athletic event.
The 2012 Campus Master Plan Update process is underway. Everyone in the University community is invited to participate in the planning process, beginning with an online survey. Deadline for completing the survey is March 11. Click here for more information and to access the survey. Be sure to return to the site occasionally to check on the results of the survey and to review progress toward what will become the 2012 Campus Master Plan Update. Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 11 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their work before judges. To participate, undergraduate students must register their projects by submitting application forms and abstracts describing their projects by March 7. Nominations for the 2011 Capstone Heroes award must be submitted to the Office of Student Involvement and Leadership at 355 Ferguson Student Center or e-mailed to Josh Burford at burfo003@sa.ua.edu by 4 p.m. on March 7. UA faculty, staff, students, friends and community members are invited to submit nominations for individuals or groups who inspire and challenge the UA community to exhibit the principles of integrity within the Capstone Creed. The Division of Student Affairs will present the awards in March as part of the sixth annual celebration of the Capstone Creed.
The Honors College is accepting applications for Honors Connection Mentors. Mentors will have the opportunity to earn two hours of honors credit during the Fall Semester 2011 as they provide freshman students with academic insight, encourage them to take part in campus activities and serve as friends during the students’ transition into college. Applications can be downloaded from the Honors College website or picked up at the reception desk on the second floor in Nott Hall. Lock it up. Personal safety starts with you. Protect yourself and your property by becoming informed and using good judgment. Always lock up valuable items. Lock your dorm or apartment door, even when you are home. Lock your car. Lock your bike. Use a locker and lock at the Student Recreation Center. If you work in a University office, lock your purse and other valuables in a cabinet or drawer. It takes practically no time to lock up, even if you are just leaving for a moment. University Police recommend that during school breaks you take computers, stereos and other valuables home with you. For more information on preventing theft, refer to the UA Safer Living Guide.
University Recreation is offering a spring break personal training special to help students in their efforts to pursue healthier lifestyles. Students can sign up for 12 sessions plus one free nutritional consultation session or an extra personal training session for $245. Students can sign up for the special through March 11 at the Student Recreation Center. Individuals interested in doing the program with a partner can save even more, with 12 sessions costing $160 per person. More information: Matthew Brown.

Bama Dining announces $5 Fridays. Every other Friday, anyone can purchase an all-you-can-eat lunch for $5 at Burke, Lakeside or Fresh Food if payment is made with cash, credit card, Bama Cash or Dining Dollars. Bama Dining also announces that Subway is now open in the Ferguson Student Center food court.

The Student Government Association will host a date auction at the north end zone of Bryant-Denny Stadium on Feb. 16 to raise money for the new SGA Scholarship Endowment Fund. The auction will feature raffle items and students from various campus organizations, including football players, SGA officers and Greek organizations. Pulitzer prize-winning journalist and columnist for The New York Times, Thomas Friedman, will visit campus on Feb. 22. Friedman is the author of “The World is Flat” and “Hot, Flat, and Crowded.” He will address students from 3:30-4:30 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center Theater. He will also speak at 7 p.m. at the Bryant Conference Center’s Sellers Auditorium. The evening speech is open to the general public; the event is free, but tickets are required. The Honors College will host Kavita Ramdas on Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. in 205 Gorgas Library as part of the college’s faculty-in-residence series. Ramdas provides leadership and direction for the largest grant-making foundation in the world that is focused exclusively on supporting international women’s human rights. The president and CEO of the Professional Convention Management Association will discuss career opportunities with select UA students Feb. 23 at both 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Child Development Research Center, Room 33. Deborah Sexton, a 30-year veteran of the meetings and convention industry, will visit campus as part of the UA College of Human Environmental Sciences’ Spring Hospitality Series designed for students in its restaurant, hotel and meetings management program. In celebration of African-Heritage History Month, selections of items from the “Black Americana” collection, a part of the “A.S. Williams III Americana Collection,” are on display in Gorgas Library in the Pearce Foyer and the Williams Room (301 Gorgas). Dr. Geraldine Bell will display her personal collection of Gee’s Bend quilts on Feb. 16 at 3 p.m. in 301 Ferguson Student Center. Bell is a professor and the director of the Learning Resources Center at Miles College. Her quilts make up the largest personal collection of Gee’s Bend quilts. The Women’s Resource Center and the department of gender and race studies at UA are hosting the event.
National Read-In Day will be Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Crossroads Community Center lounge. Celebrated nationwide for 21 years, the read-in focuses on literacy and black literary culture. The EveryWoman Book Club will meet at noon on Feb. 24 at The University Club to discuss “Leaving Gee’s Bend” by Irene Latham. Latham will attend the lunch and take part in the discussion. The book has been selected in honor of African-American Heritage Month. Lunch will be provided for a fee of $11.83 in exact change or by check. Dessert is extra. Students are invited to the next Safe Zone training session on Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon in 131 Lloyd Hall. The Safe Zone program trains people who are interested in being allies for the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community at UA. The program provides information about the coming-out process and the challenges LGBTQ students face, as well as resources for dealing with discrimination, harassment and homophobia in the classroom and on campus. The Women’s Resource Center and the Ferguson Student Center will host a day trip to Gee’s Bend on Feb. 26. The rural community located on the Alabama River southwest of Selma is nationally known for its multigenerational quilting technique in the style of traditional African-American quilts and for invoking the style of Amish quilts and modern art. Attendees will take a ferry ride, discover Black Belt treasures and investigate the historic Gee’s Bend region. More information and reservations: the Women’s Resource Center at 348-5040.
Apwonjo is hosting a bake sale every Monday through April 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Ferguson Student Center lobby. Money raised will help support art-therapy classes for former child soldiers in war-affected communities in Uganda. The artwork is exhibited nationally to raise funds for clean, fresh drinking water in these communities and to encourage international dialogue and education. More information: Caitlin Trotter.
The Sigma Tau Delta English honor society is hosting a book drive to raise funds to help children affected by war in Uganda. The Eating Disorder Strategics Team will host its annual “Fashion Rocks and So Does My Body” event on Feb. 24 in the Ferguson Student Center ballroom. The event represents a diverse group of models, who exemplify beauty in all shapes and sizes. The event is held in conjunction with Eating Disorders Awareness Week and Body Appreciation Week. Students interested in participating in the fashion show or other parts of the awareness and appreciation week should e-mail the department of health promotion and wellness at health@ua.edu.
