Greek Councils Rename Cup to Honor UA President Witt

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The President’s Cup, awarded to the top chapter in each of the four Greek governing councils at the Greek Excellence Awards Banquet each year at The University of Alabama, has been renamed the Witt Cup in recognition of the support and vision UA President Robert E. The resolution passed by the governing councils says in part: “Dr. Robert E. Witt’s visionary leadership of the University has led to a period of unprecedented growth within the Greek community, increased goodwill between the University and Greek alumni, and fostered a culture of academic excellence.”

The resolution recognized the administrative and financial support the Greek community has enjoyed under Witt’s leadership, crediting that support for the doubling in size of the community during his presidency. This robust growth included a Panhellenic sorority recruitment that represented the largest class of women in the nation in 2010 fall semester.

Also during his tenure, a number of Greek houses have been renovated, four new fraternity houses have been constructed and two more are planned. Four new sorority houses are planned and new Panhellenic sororities are being added to campus.

Council members wanted to acknowledge the president’s personal support and contributions as well as the administrative and financial support.

“Dr. Witt has been such a proponent of the Greek community,” said Ashley Getwan, Panhellenic Association president. “He’s been a great mentor to several of us and given us such good advice. We really appreciate him.”

Witt holds honorary membership in Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
