Student-employee W-2 forms will be sent to local mailing addresses by Jan. 31. By Jan. 21, students employed at UA should confirm that their local mailing addresses are correct by logging in to myBama and clicking on the Student tab. Under the Banner Self-Service feature, open the Personal Information folder and click on the Update Addresses and Phones link. Student employees can call the Human Resources Service Center at 348-7732 for assistance.

Creative Campus is hosting the first UA Sketchbook Project. Students, faculty and staff are invited to fill sketchbooks with poetry, drawings, paintings, collages or whatever they like. The completed sketchbooks will be collected in the spring and exhibited in conjunction with the Druid City Arts Festival. To participate and receive a sketchbook, send name and contact information to UAsketchbook@gmail.com by Jan. 31. Creative Campus plans to conduct the sketchbook project annually.

Artists and musicians can participate in the Druid City Arts festival by completing one of the application forms found at UA’s Creative Campus website. Registration deadline is Jan. 28. The festival will be held on March 26 in downtown Tuscaloosa.

The Women’s Resource Center is seeking student writers to help with the spring 2011 edition of Our Voice newsletter. Journalism majors can come to a planning meeting at the center on Feb. 3 at 2 p.m. Story assignments, deadlines and themes will be discussed. Undergraduate students of all majors are invited to enter UA’s annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Conference scheduled for April 11 at the Bryant Conference Center. Students can compete for cash prizes and earn practical experience in defending or performing their work before judges. To participate, undergraduate students must register their projects by submitting application forms and abstracts describing their projects by March 7. To keep students informed if severe weather or an emergency occurs on campus, the University uses UA Alerts to simultaneously send voice calls and text messages to cell phones and e-mails to myBama and Crimson e-mail accounts. In an emergency, an e-mail will be sent to a student’s myBama account. Students should make sure that their contact information on myBama is updated. Students who do not check their myBama e-mail accounts need to turn on e-mail forwarding. Students can find directions for doing this under the Student Tab on myBama. To view and make changes to their information online, students can log into their myBama accounts at http://mybama.ua.edu. Dr. Janis Edwards, associate professor of communication studies, will talk on “(What) Can Sarah Palin Teach Us About Women in Politics Now?” at the first Brown Bag lecture of 2011. The lecture starts at noon on Jan. 19 in 308 Manly Hall. Students can bring their lunches and should arrive early, as space is limited. The Women’s Resource Center will spread awareness about incarcerated women in Alabama during Women in Prison Awareness Week, Jan. 24-28. The UA community will have the opportunity to participate in a letter-writing campaign to incarcerated women, a toiletry and purse collection, a prison demonstration on the Quad, a panel discussion and a visit to a women’s prison. Relay for Life 2011 kickoff will be in the Ferguson Student Center Game Room on Jan. 24 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. All student organizations, fraternities, sororities, residence halls, academic departments and groups of friends can register for a team at the kickoff event. “Lost Boys of Sudan,” a film about two Sudanese refugees escaping a civil war and coming to America, will be shown in the Ferguson Student Center Theater on Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. A Sudanese “lost boy” currently living in Alabama will speak before the film and be available for questions and answers afterward. The Every Woman Book Club will hold its first meeting of the year on Jan. 27 at noon at the University Club to discuss Diana Craig Bibb’s new novel, “Goodwin Girls.” Bibb is a member of the book club. MathWorks will present a free MATLAB seminar on Feb. 9 in the 205 Gorgas Library. Eric Johnson, MathWorks application engineer, will conduct two sessions, one beginning at 9 a.m. and the second at 1:30 p.m. The first session will be an introduction to MATLAB; the second session will cover the more advanced topics of speeding up applications and parallel computing with MATLAB.
