Turner, Haskew Named Interim Department Heads in UA’s College of Engineering

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Dr. C. Heath Turner has been named interim head of the department of chemical and biological engineering and Dr. Tim A. Haskew has been named interim head of the department of electrical and computer engineering, both in The University of Alabama’s College of Engineering.

Turner, associate professor of chemical and biological engineering, joined the UA faculty in 2003 as an assistant professor. He was promoted to associate professor in 2009. Turner has been active in research related to the theory and simulation of molecular fluids and materials.

His current research projects range from the simulation of fluorescent nanoparticles to the modeling of fuel cell performance. He has received external funding for his research from the Department of Energy, the Department of Defense and the National Science Foundation, including a CAREER award in 2008. 

Turner is an active member of several professional societies, including the American Chemical Society, the International Adsorption Society, the Electrochemical Society and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, where he serves on the national programming committee. Turner has previously held visiting positions with NASA in Langley, Va., and with the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, D.C. He has published more than 40 refereed journal articles.

Turner received his bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from Auburn University, and he received his master’s and doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from North Carolina State University.     

Haskew is a professor of electrical and computer engineering and director of the College of Engineering’s Electromechanical Systems Laboratory. He is also director of the electrical and computer engineering graduate program. 

Haskew is a senior member of the IEEE and a member of a number of IEEE professional societies including the Power Electronics Society, Industry Applications Society and the Power and Energy Society.

Haskew was active on the conference committee and as the seminar chair for the Applied Power Electronics Conference from 2004 through 2010. His research interests include energy conversion, power electronics, power systems and control. He has authored or co-authored more than 50 refereed publications and two book chapters.

Haskew received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees from Auburn University, and he joined the UA faculty in 1991.
