ANNOUNCEMENTS
An e-mail scam was recently sent to UA faculty, staff and student accounts. The e-mail asks recipients to provide their usernames and passwords for a UA Web mail account upgrade. This message is a phishing scam attempting to get login information, which will be used by the scammers to hijack e-mail accounts. Recipients should not click the link or reply with their usernames and passwords. Delete the message and take no action. Those who may have already responded to the e-mail should change their passwords immediately. Students should always be skeptical of messages that seem to come from the University concerning their Bama e-mail or any other accounts. The Office of Information Technology never solicits usernames and passwords in e-mails. For more information about this scam or how to protect yourself from similar phishing scams, call the IT Service Desk at 348-5555.
Alabama students have until Nov. 24 at 5 p.m. to convert their student tickets to student guest tickets for the Auburn football game. Student upgrades must be done at the Alabama Ticket Office inside Coleman Coliseum. Ticket office windows are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost to upgrade an Auburn student ticket will be $60.
Campus officials will begin to prepare for the Alabama-Auburn football game beginning on Wednesday, Nov. 24. All parking on Colonial Drive between University Boulevard and Bryant Drive should be cleared by 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Any car that remains on Colonial Drive after 6 p.m. on Nov. 24 will be towed at the owner’s expense. The Capstone Drive lot, communications card lot, Elm Drive lot and Rose Administration Building lot should also be cleared by 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Eligible students may request to purchase a post-season football game ticket the first week of December. UA students interested in purchasing a bowl game ticket should add themselves to the ticket request list between noon on Monday, Dec. 6, and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Students will need to go to http://www.actcard.ua.edu to add themselves to the list. Detailed information concerning the purchase of a ticket for a post-season football game will be sent via e-mail within the coming weeks.
Students are encouraged to apply for or submit nominations for UA’s five Premier Awards. The Premier Awards are the highest honors given by UA. Individuals may only apply for one of the Premier Awards. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. on Nov. 24. UH 400-010 College’s Glass Ceiling is a new two-hour, service-learning course designed to teach high school students about the glass ceiling that exists in college access. UA students who register for the course will learn about current policy measures and perceptions regarding college access. Participation in Blueprints, a six-session program at Central High School, is a course requirement. Through Blueprints, UA students will mentor high school students through the college-access process, culminating with a campus visit for Central students and a Blueprints graduation. Literacy is the Edge has students available to speak to classes and campus organizations as part of LITE’s 2010 “It’s Never Too Late” to learn to read campaign. LITE is a student-advocacy group for literacy at UA. Two new dimensions for this year’s campaign are reaching adults in West Alabama who desire reading help and producing communication materials to assist the Bessemer Library recruit adult tutors and reach adults who need help. This week’s football game against Auburn University will kick off at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, at Bryant-Denny Stadium and will be televised on CBS. The senior members of the team will be recognized. The English Graduate Organization will sell used books and baked goods in Morgan Hall from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 1. Paperback books are 50 cents and baked goods are $1. Only cash will be accepted. Proceeds go toward research and publication costs for English graduate students.
John Cariani’s “Almost, Maine” will be presented by the Gamma Gamma cast of Alpha Psi Omega on Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 5 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Allen Bales Theatre in Rowand-Johnson Hall. Tickets are $3 for students and $5 for general admission.
The Business Honors Program is collecting binder-ready textbooks, notebooks, notecards, magazines, newspapers and a variety of paper materials from Nov. 29 to Dec. 13 as a part of UA’s Go Green initiative. UA’s Exercise Physiology Club is collecting supplies for a local animal welfare organization.
