ANNOUNCEMENTS

Alabama students will be able to convert their student tickets to student guest tickets on Nov. 16-17 for the Georgia State football game and on Nov. 19-24 for the Auburn football game. Student upgrades must be done at the Alabama Ticket Office inside Coleman Coliseum. Ticket office windows are open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost to upgrade a Georgia State student ticket will be $35. The cost to upgrade an Auburn student ticket will be $60.

Classes are cancelled for Thursday, Nov. 18, to accommodate the several thousand fans expected to be in town for the 6:30 p.m. football game against Georgia State University at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Classes will resume on Friday, Nov. 19.

University Libraries will operate the following schedules on Thursday, Nov. 18: Gorgas Library, 7:30 a.m.–6 p.m.; Rodgers Library, 7:45 a.m.–5 p.m.; Bruno and McLure libraries, 7:45 a.m.–noon; and Hoole Library, closed. Whenever the libraries are closed, all databases, e-journals and e-books remain fully accessible from the libraries’ website at http://www.lib.ua.edu.

Eligible students may request to purchase post-season football game tickets the first week of December. UA students interested in purchasing bowl game tickets should add themselves to the ticket request list between noon on Monday, Dec. 6, and 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Dec. 8. Students will need to go to http://www.actcard.ua.edu to add themselves to these lists. Detailed information concerning the purchase of tickets for post-season football games will be sent via e-mail within the coming weeks.

The Student Health Center will deliver flu shots to UA students on Nov. 17 from noon to 4 p.m. at Tutwiler Hall. Cost is $20 and will be applied to a student’s University account. No payment is accepted on-site. SHC is also administering flu shots at the Student Health Center each Monday through Thursday, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., and on Fridays, 9 a.m.-4:30 p.m. No appointment is necessary. Students are encouraged to apply for or submit nominations for UA’s five Premier Awards. The Premier Awards are the highest honors given by UA. Individuals may only apply for one of the Premier Awards. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. on Nov. 24. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. on Dec. 3 to the Office of Student Affairs, 275 Rose Administration Building. Click here for complete information.

Interviews will be held Nov. 17 and 19 for UA students who want to become mentors for local second-graders and third-graders through the Al’s Pals mentorship program. Applications are available at the following Ferguson Center locations: the second-floor information desk, the Community Service Center, the Student Involvement and Leadership office and the Ferguson Center director’s office. Today is the last day students can give their opinions on UA’s alcohol policies and other alcohol issues in a survey conducted by Teri Henley, instructor of advertising and public relations. The survey is voluntary and anonymous and contains no questions on personal alcohol use. Click here to take the survey.

UH 400-010 College’s Glass Ceiling is a new two-hour, service-learning course designed to teach high school students about the glass ceiling that exists in college access. UA students who register for the course will learn about current policy measures and perceptions regarding college access. Participation in Blueprints, a six-session program at Central High School, is a course requirement. Through Blueprints, UA students will mentor high school students through the college-access process, culminating with a campus visit for Central students and a Blueprints graduation. Literacy is the Edge has students available to speak to classes and campus organizations as part of LITE’s 2010 “It’s Never Too Late” to learn to read campaign. LITE is a student-advocacy group for literacy at UA. Two new dimensions for this year’s campaign are reaching adults in West Alabama who desire reading help and producing communication materials to assist the Bessemer Library recruit adult tutors and reach adults who need help. The “Making Your Cause Work” honors class is conducting a survey through Nov. 19 as part of a project it is preparing for presentation to The University of Alabama. EVENTS, ARTS AND ENTERTAINMENT

This week’s football game against Georgia State University will kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Nov. 18 at Bryant-Denny Stadium and will be televised live on ESPNU. Visit Action Card Office, http://uagameday.com and http://www.rolltide.com for information about the game, including how to “Get in the Game,” the way student tickets are handled, entering the stadium (Gate 31) and parking.

Pi Beta Phi and the Alabama Army ROTC are sponsoring a 5K run, Victory Lap for Literacy, on Nov. 20 at 10 a.m. Cost is $12 for early registration. On-site registration is $15 and takes place at 8:30 a.m. on Nov. 20 at the ROTC building behind Gorgas Library. A T-shirt is included in the registration fee. UA’s Exercise Physiology Club is collecting supplies for a local animal welfare organization. Donations may include bleach, paper towels, garbage bags, cat litter, Dawn dish detergent, or laundry detergent. Donations can be dropped off in the collection bin located in the lobby of Moore Hall.
