UA and AU wrap up food drive
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Nov. 22
Today is the last day for the 16th annual Beat Auburn Beat hunger. For over a month now students have been hosting events to promote the campaign. The winner will be announced tomorrow afternoon. The University of Alabama has won the past three years. All food collected from UA will go to the West Alabama Food Bank.

Area food banks gear up for season of need

… And on Monday, a truckload of food donations from the six-week annual Beat Auburn Beat Hunger drive was delivered to the West Alabama Food Bank. Last year, the University of Alabama collected 175,653 pounds of food through the food drive, which is meant to raise awareness and donations. This year’s Beat Auburn Beat Hunger drive ended Monday. Huge crowds expected for Bowl; UA crew to work on Thanksgiving
WVUA (Tuscaloosa) – Nov. 22
Estimates are as high as 250,000 people in Tuscaloosa for Iron Bowl Friday. University of Alabama officials say they expect many will arrive days before the big day. Head of UA gameday operations Gina Johnson tells us the university anticipates many fans will spend their Thanksgiving holidays on the campus. Johnson says a gameday crew will be working Thanksgiving day, even though the university is officially closed.

The University of Alabama chapter of Pi Beta Phi finished its month-long Champions Are Readers (CAR) program at Holt Elementary on Friday with a pep rally for the participating third-graders…To encourage students participating in this year’s CAR program, sorority members visited Holt Elementary weekly to read with students. The students were asked to read an extra 15 minutes each day with family and friends and log their progress on a “reading racetrack.” The students who made it to the “finish line” received a certificate of recognition, a book and a CAR medal on Friday…

Shelby County murder trial reaches final arguments for sentencing of Ryan Russell in 2008 slaying

… Prosecutors this morning urged jurors to recommend death for Ryan G. Russell. This afternoon, the defense turned to clinical psychologist Stan Brodsky from the University of Alabama. Brodsky testified that in September he interviewed and tested Russell, whom he said he found well-adjusted with no apparent hostility…

Local teacher honored as one of best in state

… Ouderkirk submitted her application for the award to David Kopaska-Merkel, who heads the petroleum systems and technology section at the Geological Survey of Alabama, which is based at the University of Alabama. Kopaska-Merkel is chairman of the Outstanding Earth Science Teacher awards program at the state level… “I’ve known Kim for a long time, and she’s always been really involved with teaching the kids,” Kopaska-Merkel said. “She’s pretty innovative. She told me about a project where the kids drew a life-size (ancient creature) in the parking lot. She took a picture of them next to it. It’s things like that that make learning fun for children and make them want to learn.”…
