Honor Societies at UA Hold Event to Benefit Literacy Program

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The University of Alabama’s senior honor societies will sponsor a fundraiser to benefit Literacy is The Edge on Wednesday, Nov. 17.

Fighting illiteracy is this year’s community service initiative for the four senior honors societies — the Anderson Society, Mortar Board, Blue Key and Omicron Delta Kappa.

The highlight of the event is a spelling bee for UA students that will show the importance of the fight against functional illiteracy in Alabama.  The event will be held from 8-10 p.m. at Innisfree in Tuscaloosa.

According to the Literacy Council, one in four Alabamians are functionally illiterate, which amounts to more than 10 times the capacity of Bryant-Denny Stadium. The reading and writing skills of those who are functionally illiterate are generally inadequate for daily activities.

Aside from participating in the spelling bee, there are several ways for students and other attendees to support the event. Those who donate more than $3 to the cause will be eligible to win raffle prizes that range from various gift cards to a football signed by Nick Saban. T-shirts for the event will also be available for attendees to purchase. All proceeds from the spelling bee event will go toward LITE’s efforts to fight functional illiteracy in Alabama.
